Langballig is an officially recognised climatic health resort. Langballig and its districts are set in the Angeln landscape, right on the Flensburg Outer Fjord. Cliffs, stream valleys and wide meadows shape the coastal landscape. In Langballigau, the natural beach is right next to the harbour; the small fishing harbour has restaurants, cafés and ice cream stands. During your stay, you can combine days by the water with walks, wildlife watching, museum visits or a bike ride.

Fjord, beach and the Langballigau valley

The Langballigau valley has been a nature reserve since 1990 and provides a habitat for kingfishers and grey wagtails. A walk through the valley takes you through hillside forests, past streams and meadows, and across marshland to the sea. You can also enjoy the natural scenery and peaceful surroundings while hiking along the Flensburg Outer Fjord. The area’s varied landscapes give the experience of nature in Langballig its own distinctive character.

During the season, the natural beach has a bathing jetty. As seasonal beach facilities may change, check the current status before your visit. Parking is available at the beach. A beach wheelchair for the sand and a bathing wheelchair can be hired from the harbour master in Langballigau; confirm availability before travelling. There is also a pedal boat hire at the natural beach, but availability may change.

The M/S Feodora II operates scheduled sailings from Langballigau to Sønderborg. Timetables and weather can affect ferry services, so check the current timetable before planning a crossing. This lets you plan a ferry trip as a separate activity, while the beach and harbour offer other ways to spend a day in Langballigau.

Mills, museum trails and cycling routes

The Angeln/Unewatt Landscape Museum has a 1.7-kilometre museum trail. The restored and operational Fortuna windmill is a technical monument. Volunteers demonstrate the mill and the butter mill. The butter mill is a working facility that illustrates historic dairy and agricultural work. The museum is at Unewatter Straße 1a in Langballig; visitor parking is off Federal Highway 199.

Historic walking trails also lead to sites and buildings of note. Information boards explain each stop, and the routes are 9.8 and 16.3 kilometres long. For longer cycling trips, the Baltic Sea Cycle Route passes through Langballig between Glücksburg and the Schlei near Kappeln. The 28-kilometre Mill Tour passes through the Unewatt Landscape Museum and Langballigau.

More nature and culture in Schleswig-Flensburg

The wider destination of Schleswig-Flensburg offers more nature and culture alongside Langballig’s fjord landscape. Haithabu and the Danewerk have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since June 2018; more than 25 kilometres of the Danewerk rampart remain today. At 773 hectares, Geltinger Birk is the largest nature reserve in the Schleswig-Flensburg district. It has well-maintained paths and guided walks that share information about the area’s flora and fauna.

More than 130 bird species can be observed on Holnis, the northernmost tip of Schleswig-Holstein’s young moraine landscape, including around 65 breeding species. These regional nature and cultural destinations add to the choice within the wider destination of Schleswig-Flensburg; Langballig itself stands out for its location on the Flensburg Outer Fjord, the Langballigau valley and the landscape museum.
