Nordhackstedt offers several different starting points for a journey of discovery: an art-historical church, the community park with flower beds and water lilies, fishing opportunities, and the work of the local history association. When choosing accommodation, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on: cultural history and the park, fishing, or excursions in the wider region?

Church: Art from Several Centuries

In 1897, a tower was added to the west end of the church. Late Gothic paintings adorn the architecture around the wide chancel arch, with a Passion sequence carved from oak, dated 1284, above it. The paintings were discovered in 1926 and uncovered and restored in 1927. The wall paintings and wooden sculpture create distinct focal points.

The other furnishings can also be compared by age and design. The granite baptismal font dates from the 12th century, and the Gothic wooden altar crucifix from the 13th century. The pulpit, dating from 1713, features reliefs depicting the birth, baptism and resurrection of Christ. On the west gallery are twelve Baroque paintings depicting the apostles. An altarpiece rediscovered in 2009 has been restored; its central shrine and painted wings probably date from the 16th or 17th century. The furnishings thus span a range of periods, from early works to Baroque depictions and carvings.

Community Park, Fishing and Association Activities

The community park is behind the cemetery. Flower beds and water lilies are part of its landscape, along with the spacious parkland. This means that, alongside art-historical themes, plants and water offer their own points of interest in Nordhackstedt.

Nordhackstedt Trout Lake has twelve fishing platforms; check the facilities before your visit. The lake can be rented by the hour or by the day for company or association events. A barbecue area is included for outings such as children’s birthday parties. If you are planning an event, confirm rental arrangements and availability in advance. A fishing permit is required for fishing in the Rodau and the community park pond; check the applicable permit conditions in advance.

The Schleswigsche Geest Local History Association (Heimatverein Schleswigsche Geest e.V.) was founded in 1953 to preserve the history of the Schleswig Geest. In addition to its historical work, the association offers events and excursions. Its activities therefore complement the focus on individual works of art with an opportunity to explore regional history. If you are planning to attend an event or excursion, check the current programme.
