Discover Oersberg: village history and nature park hiking trail
Accommodation in Oersberg
Oersberg offers a range of starting points for planning a trip: traces of the history of the former village of Toestrup and the town’s place on the Nature Park Hiking Trail. A group of buildings south of the village is all that remains of the former Toestrup. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether building and settlement history or outdoor activities should shape the day’s itinerary.
Church and village history in Toestrup
St. John’s Church in Toestrup was built in 1198 as a fieldstone church with a wooden bell frame. Its year of construction, fieldstone and wood provide tangible points of reference for its architectural history. The fieldstone church and wooden bell frame bring different materials together; the precise year of construction also places the church’s history in an early historical period. For travellers interested in historic architectural styles, there is more to focus on than just a date.
The protected ensemble of St. John’s Church in Toestrup includes its furnishings, the bell house, the churchyard, gravestones dating from before 1870, the churchyard gate, the side gate and the ring of lime trees. The historic ensemble therefore extends beyond the church building to include the churchyard and its features.
The group of buildings south of Oersberg is all that remains of the village of Toestrup, first mentioned in 1231 and abandoned around 1600 in favour of the Toestorf estate. It comprises the church, surrounded by a tree-lined cemetery, the thatched-roof parsonage, more than 200 years old, with its parish hall and sexton’s house, and the village inn. The dates mark different stages: the church’s construction in 1198, Toestrup’s first mention in 1231 and the village’s abandonment in favour of the estate around 1600.
Toestorf Estate also has a long history: it is documented from the 13th century onwards. The manor house was built by the architect Tobias Wendler between 1765 and 1768. The estate’s earliest documentation and the precisely dated construction phase of the manor house point to different historical periods. Medieval church history, the development of Toestrup and the manor house’s architecture thus emerge as distinct themes.
Landscape and trails
The Oersberger Graben is designated as a reserve area of particular importance for nature and the landscape. This planning designation adds a distinct landscape aspect to the history of the village and its buildings.
Oersberg is listed on the Nature Park Hiking Trail. The trail is just under 160 kilometres long, marked throughout with yellow arrows, and also offers shorter sections and circular routes. When planning, you can therefore choose between the full trail and the shorter types of routes mentioned. Consider how much walking you would like to do that day, and check the route locally.
A cycling route passes Toestorf Estate on the way to a megalithic tomb near Oersberg, where a stop and visit are recommended. This route offers another way to explore the area’s historic sites. Check the route information locally before setting off.
Plan your stay
If you are mainly interested in church architecture and settlement history, you can build your trip around these themes. If hiking is your priority, first choose the type of route you want: the full trail and the shorter sections on offer call for different levels of planning.
A regional perspective on Rabenkirchen
Within the wider region, Rabenkirchen is home to the Stenerberg Golf Club, with a 9-hole course adapted to the hilly landscape. Ponds, hedgerows and plantings add to the ecological value of the grounds. This brings in a distinct landscape and golf aspect, different from the church histories and historic buildings in Toestrup.
