Ellerau combines a quiet, rural atmosphere with green spaces, swimming facilities and insights into the town’s history. Hamburg is about 20 kilometres away. Whether you spend time in the Bürgerpark, visit the outdoor swimming pool or are interested in how people lived in the past, Ellerau offers a range of ideas for planning your day.

Ellerau as a base

Ellerau is on the AKN railway line between Kaltenkirchen and Eidelstedt and is served by a public transport stop. When planning your arrival and departure, it is best to check the latest timetables. This helps you combine your journey with the experiences you want to focus on during your stay.

Green space and exercise in the BĂĽrgerpark

At around six hectares, the Bürgerpark is Ellerau’s central green space. It combines recreational areas with habitats for plants and animals; paths run through zones along the Krumbek, some quiet and others more actively designed. This brings nature watching and exercise together in the park, without limiting your visit to just one kind of activity.

If you enjoy being active outdoors, the BĂĽrgerpark also has a fitness trail with three equipment stations. It lets you add some exercise to your time in the green surroundings, while the paths and quieter areas offer space to take a more leisurely pace.

Time in the water and facilities at the outdoor swimming pool

The Ellerau outdoor swimming pool has a paddling pool for young children and changing facilities with hot-water showers. There is free parking in front of the pool grounds. The pool uses waste heat from a biogas plant to heat the water—an energy-saving solution that is part of the facility’s technical setup.

The programme also includes swimming lessons for children, offered by VHS Ellerau and DLRG Ellerau e.V. VHS also offers back fitness, aqua gymnastics and aqua power jogging at the outdoor pool. Pool staff can award swimming badges, including lifesaving badges; lifesaving ability is assessed on request. A kiosk serves hot and cold drinks as well as food. As opening times and services may vary by season, it is worth checking the latest opening hours and course dates, as well as whether the kiosk is open, before your visit.

Everyday history in the museums

At the Karl Rautenberg Museum, you can explore a range of trades and the history of schooling. On display are tools from shoemakers’, tailors’, blacksmiths’ and carpenters’ workshops, as well as from the masonry and butchery trades. Old class photos, exercise books and textbooks illustrate how education has changed. A special exhibition is devoted to the former Arthur A. Erlhoff company. The oldest minute book, dating from the early 18th century, can also be viewed there.

The Ellerau Local History Museum focuses on rural life around 1900. Rooms such as the bedroom and kitchen are arranged as they would have looked in rural farmhouses. A classroom with historical exhibits adds another perspective on everyday life in earlier times to the living spaces. The two museums therefore offer different emphases: one brings together the history of trades and schooling, while the other brings rural homes and ways of life to life. Before visiting a museum, check the latest visitor information and whether the special exhibition is on display.
