Discover Segeberg: Forests, culture and experiences
Accommodation in Segeberg
Segeberg district combines forests, trails and varied landscapes with cultural venues and a wide range of excursion destinations. Sometimes the focus is on wildlife watching and outdoor activities, sometimes on an open-air performance, historic buildings or a visit to the thermal baths. Local produce and events are also part of the picture.
Forests, trails and nature in Segeberg district
Eekholt Wildlife Park lies on the northern edge of Segeberger Forst, between Bad Bramstedt and Bad Segeberg, set within the landscape of the Osterau. Across 67 hectares, visitors can observe more than 700 animals from 100 species; animal numbers may change. The 40-square-kilometre Segeberger Forst offers a woodland setting for nature-focused outings. In the northeast, the hilly landscape of Holstein Switzerland Nature Park extends into the district.
The district’s hiking trails and paths are suitable for both longer outings and short walks. Guided hikes and nature tours offer insights into local flora and fauna. If you prefer cycling, you’ll find seven circular routes in Holsteiner Quellenland, north of Bad Segeberg. This makes it easy to plan your preferred kind of activity as a focus of your trip: a short loop, a longer hike or a bike ride.
Cultural history and special experiences
Different chapters of local history come together in Bad Segeberg. St. Mary’s Church was built from fired clay bricks in 1156. It was the first brick church of its kind north of the Elbe and the first basilica with a vaulted ceiling. The Alt-Segeberger Bürgerhaus Museum presents the building and its residents’ history, dating back to 1541, as well as an exhibition on Segeberg’s 800-year development. With around 40 wooden sculptures, a selection of watercolours and drawings, and a documentary, the Otto Flath Art Gallery is dedicated to the artist’s life and work.
Every summer, the Karl May Games take place at the open-air theatre at the foot of Bad Segeberg’s Kalkberg; each performance can accommodate up to 7,700 spectators. The visitor complex also includes Indian Village, with the LaGrande western town, and Nebraska House, home to the exhibition “The World of the Indians”. Check the current performance dates if you’d like to plan your stay around them. Noctalis offers another nature and adventure experience: at interactive play and learning stations, visitors can explore the world of bats and their habitat. More than 30,000 bats use the Kalkberg Cave in Bad Segeberg as a winter roost.
Smaller museums and guided tours offer other points of interest. Guided tours at the C. & F. Blunck Wool Spinning Mill trace and bring to life the entire wool-processing process in a historic mill complex; check the availability of tours in advance. The listed gatehouse at Seedorf houses a small museum on the history of the building and the Seedorf estate. Check separately for visitor information.
Farm life, events and wellness
Gut Stockseehof sells sweet cherries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries directly from the farm and at its farmers’ market, along with other fresh regional produce. Its programme includes garden shows, harvests of various fruits, a music festival, workshops and a Christmas market. Fruit availability, the market and events are seasonal, so check current dates and availability before making firm plans for these experiences.
For a different kind of experience, there’s HolstenTherme in Kaltenkirchen. Facilities include an ErlebnisBad, a SaunaWeltreise, a WellnessStudio, a FitnessStudio and dining options. Tropical pools, two large slides and a SoleRelaxpool complement the water and wellness facilities. If you’re choosing accommodation based on a particular experience, it may help to first decide whether nature, culture, events or wellness will be the main consideration.
Consider locations and transport when planning
Segeberg district is connected to the Hamburg Transport Association’s network and can be reached by regional train and bus. Check current timetables for your specific plans. When choosing a base, you can focus on the destinations that matter to you rather than assuming one location will suit every outing.
