Dägeling lies on the Geest island south of Itzehoe. As you enter the village, the Wellenberg hill comes into view; the Dägeling Heath lies at the edge of the village. Cycling, walking and local history offer different ways to explore the area. If you are looking for accommodation, you can choose where to stay based on whether you mainly want to spend time outdoors or also explore the village’s historical traces.

Heathland and trails for outdoor activities

Dägeling Heath lies on the edge of the village and is a local recreation area for cycling and walking. Nordoer Heath reopened as a local recreation area in 2009; its surfaced paths can also be used for walks and hikes in wet weather. This gives you a practical choice when planning your day: cycling and walks at the edge of the village, or hikes on surfaced paths that can also be used when it is wet.

Nordoe Inland Dunes

A well-established network of paths provides access to Nordoe Inland Dunes for nature experiences and local recreation. Since early 2013, the area has been both an EU Habitats Directive site and a nature reserve; it is also part of the National Natural Heritage. Its habitats include open pioneer vegetation on sand, pine-covered inland dunes, grassland, heath-covered dunes, damp dwarf-shrub heath and oak forests. Open areas, heath and woodland give different character to this natural landscape. Check current guidance from the area’s management before visiting.

Local history and getting here

Dägeling was first mentioned in 1427 under the name Dodelinghe. From 1526, Dägeling belonged to the Breitenburg estate. Maps from around 1630 show the village as an estate on the old Ox Road. These milestones trace the village’s history from its early name through its association with the estate to its depiction on a historical route map. Wellenbergstraße was part of Federal Highway 5 until 1960.

The Itzehoe-Süd exit of the A23 is close to Dägeling. Check current route conditions before setting out. This lets you plan the village’s history and your journey there separately.
