The Steinburg district stretches across a varied landscape from the Elbe to the Holstein marshlands. It also offers distinctive local landmarks and themes: the lowest point in Germany, cycling tours, museums, a historic mill and seasonal activities. This variety gives you several ways to plan your trip: spend time outdoors, explore regional history or choose an event centred on culture and food. Which of these ideas appeals most may also influence where you stay.

Landscape and the lowest point in Germany

The lowest point in the Federal Republic of Germany is in the Wilstermarsch, 3.54 metres below sea level. The Wilstermarsch is one of Schleswig-Holstein’s oldest landscapes. There is a free car park and rest area with an information board at the lowest point. Here, an unusual elevation and a specific point of interest come together to make a worthwhile stop.

The landscape stretching from the Elbe region to the Holstein marshlands provides a broad setting for exploring the district. If you want to plan a brief stop as well as a cycling tour, the lowest point has parking and a rest area, along with an information board. Its distinctive elevation gives the Wilstermarsch a clearly identifiable landmark.

Two ways to explore by bike

The Elbe Cycle Route is one of five long-distance cycling routes that pass through the Steinburg district. The Schloss-Tour, or Castle Tour, offers a specific alternative: it is 15 kilometres long, easy, and takes about an hour. The route passes Breitenburg Castle. The castle, after which the tour is named, is considered the historic centre of the Stör landscape and has shaped the region for centuries.

The two routes offer different experiences: the Elbe Cycle Route is a long-distance route through the region, while the Castle Tour is described in terms of distance, duration and difficulty. Check current route conditions before setting out. This makes it easier to decide whether you are more interested in a single tour with a stated time frame or a long-distance cycling route.

History and art in the towns

In Glückstadt, the Detlefsen Museum combines the town’s history with a comprehensive picture of the Holstein Elbe marshes, past and present. Glückstadt’s town church also tells the story of the region: it was built as the first Protestant church in the duchies of Holstein and Schleswig. The Palais für aktuelle Kunst offers a contemporary perspective, presenting modern art in a Renaissance setting.

Itzehoe offers a range of other themes. The Prinzeßhof District Museum is housed in the town’s oldest secular building and presents the history and cultural history of Steinburg district in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Wenzel Hablik Museum displays the artist’s estate: paintings and drawings, designs for utopian space settlements, furniture and textiles, as well as collections of shell and metal figures. In Kellinghusen, the Betont Museum offers concerts featuring historical instruments and workshops focused on individual instruments; check the current programme before your visit.

Seasonal experiences and regional cuisine

Wacken Open Air takes place every year at the festival grounds in Wacken and is one of the largest heavy metal festivals in the world. Dates and ticket information change every year, so check the details for your chosen year. The Steinburg Wild Weeks offer a different kind of event: from mid-September to the end of October, Steinburg chefs prepare traditional and unusual dishes featuring hare, venison, wild boar or wild duck. Check the specific dates and participating venues in advance.

The Rumfleth Mill combines history with an offering for groups. The present mill dates from 1872. It was built as a one-storey gallery Dutch windmill with a fantail and patent sails, is still fully operational, and has been a listed building since 1981. Registered groups can enjoy coffee and cake in the granary; groups of 10 to 40 people can be accommodated there, while smaller groups of up to 20 people can also be hosted inside the windmill itself. Arrange the details in advance.

The Elbe Ice Stadium in Brokdorf offers ice skating, ice hockey, curling, ice discos and children’s birthday parties. Activities are seasonal, so check the current operating season before making plans. Alongside culture and cycling, you can choose from an annual festival, seasonal activities at the stadium and a culinary event series held for a limited period.

Choose the right base

If you are looking for accommodation in Steinburg, first decide which experiences you want to shape your stay. For culture enthusiasts, GlĂĽckstadt, Itzehoe and Kellinghusen are specific towns with different museums and historical themes. For a cycling tour or a seasonal event, the destination itself will be a key factor.
