Ahrensburg: history, culture and nature

Ahrensburg offers different ways to explore history, art, nature and outdoor activities. The Renaissance castle is also a museum: its exhibitions span the Renaissance, Historicism and modern elements. Ahrensburg Castle is also part of Stormarn’s historical heritage. It was completed in 1585 and has served continuously as a museum since 1955.

The Marstall also combines architectural history with a varied cultural program. It was built between 1845 and 1846 as part of the former estate complex in the historic village of Woldenhorn. The Marstall cultural center offers music, theater, literature, cabaret, exhibitions, dance, film screenings, lectures and performing arts for all age groups, including children. The gallery at the Marstall mainly showcases contemporary art. It presents up to five exhibitions a year, with a focus on artists from northern Germany. Another historical detail is the former riding hall: built in 1897, it was converted into an event venue in 2006, while retaining its historic fabric.

Discover nature and enjoy the outdoors

In Ahrensburg’s Wulfsdorf district, the Haus der Natur is an information and education center for nature conservation. Its permanent exhibition covers nature conservation, native birdlife and different habitats. The center’s park is recognized as a nature experience area and has nature trails. Hands-on activities include pond dipping, building nesting aids for wild bees and earwigs, looking for bats and exploring the diversity of trees. Individual activities may vary.

The Ahrensburg Tunnel Valley is a fully protected wetland landscape about seven kilometers long. Meadows, hedgerows and wetland biotopes define the area; its archaeological and geological importance is also part of its character. The Hagen Forest is also home to the remains of the medieval Arnesvelde Castle. Here, nature and history sit side by side, so a day out need not focus on just one theme.

Across the Stormarn travel destination, extensive forest and moorland landscapes form a broader regional backdrop. Hiking options include short and long circular trails, as well as the Stormarn Trail and the Way of St. James. The region also offers more than 20 circular cycling routes and BahnRadWege along disused railway lines. This selection may be useful for planning your trip if you would like to consider other options in Stormarn alongside culture and nature in Ahrensburg.
