The history of the manor house gives Mönkhagen a distinctive historical landmark. It was completed around 1870 under Ernst August Becker and is considered an example of early Historicism. Its history also includes a period of severe neglect, when the building came close to being demolished. Historical features were preserved during its restoration. The building thus brings together its origins and its story of rescue—a tangible point of interest for anyone interested in historic architecture.

The place name also points to an older interpretation: Mönkhagen is associated with monks and was first documented in 1221. It is possible that the village once belonged to Reinfeld Cistercian Monastery. The written record of the village therefore dates back long before the manor house was built.

There is one clear boundary to bear in mind when visiting: please respect private property. You may enter the manor house grounds only with permission.

When looking for accommodation, use the focus of your trip as your starting point: is the manor house’s architectural history at the heart of your visit, or are you planning other experiences in the wider destination of Stormarn? Check the location of your accommodation against the places you actually want to visit. This lets you tailor your stay to your interests rather than choosing based on a single attraction alone.

Stormarn also offers historical contrasts. Ahrensburg Castle was completed in 1585 and has served continuously as a museum since 1955. Compared with Mönkhagen Manor House, completed around 1870, the castle dates from a considerably earlier period; its continuous use as a museum also offers a different perspective on how a historic building can be used.

For days spent closer to nature, Stormarn’s forests and moorland take centre stage. Hahnheide is the district’s largest nature reserve and offers extensive hiking opportunities. There are also short and long circular hiking trails, as well as the Stormarn Trail and the Way of St. James. Those who prefer cycling will find more than 20 circular cycling routes and rail-to-bike trails along disused railway lines in the destination—another way to experience the landscape and former railway routes.

At Herrenteich in Reinfeld, you can choose between two specific circular routes. The “Around Herrenteich” nature trail is 4 kilometres long, has 16 stops and runs directly along the edge of the “Upper Herrenteich” nature reserve. Another circular route covers 3.6 kilometres around Lower Herrenteich. The lakeside promenade at Herrenteich also has two waterside terraces and additional seating areas. The longer route focuses on the stops along the edge of the protected area, while the shorter one circles Lower Herrenteich.

Paddling trips on the Trave in the north and the Bille in southern Stormarn are another activity to enjoy together. They are suitable for families, friends or colleagues and offer a different focus from hiking and cycling routes.
