Kampen (Sylt): Coast, Cliffs and Island Nature
Accommodation in Kampen
Kampen (Sylt) combines coastal landscapes and nature with beach activities, local culture and dining. The Red Cliff, Uwe Dune and Bird Decoy each offer a different perspective; the beach, divided into four sections, provides more ways to shape your stay.
Cliffs, Dune and Bird Decoy
The Red Cliff stretches for about four kilometres along Kampen’s western side towards Wenningstedt. At its highest point, the cliff edge is around 30 metres above the beach. Its red colour develops when oxygen acts on clay containing iron. The cliff and the heathland that begins at its upper edge have been protected since 1979. Check the applicable nature reserve rules on site.
At 52.5 metres, Uwe Dune is Sylt’s highest natural elevation; it offers panoramic views across the island. A dune path leading up to it starts from Zur Uwe-Düne street. A 109-step wooden staircase leads to the viewing platform.
Kampen Bird Decoy is both a bird sanctuary and a museum. On Sylt, the site dates back to a duck-catching facility originally built in 1767; the entire Bird Decoy area has been protected since 1935. A circular path leads through the woods, past the decoy houses, over a dyke and alongside a pond. 35 information stations cover the area’s flora, fauna and history.
The beach and local attractions
Kampen’s beach is divided into four sections; the divisions may change seasonally or administratively. Two dog beaches are designated: Section A in the north and Section N in the south. Trained lifeguards are on duty at all Kampen beaches; public toilets are available at several locations in the beach area. Beach services may vary by season. Beach activities include beach fitness, beach volleyball and beach soccer; the programme may also vary by season.
The free art and culture trail runs throughout Kampen. Around 40 marked bronze steles with QR codes introduce artists and other notable people associated with Kampen. Along the trail, you can discover the town’s art and cultural history.
Dining options range from fresh fish and light snacks to multi-course menus. The local food scene also includes tapas, schnitzel and tea. Individual businesses’ offerings may change.
Cultural attractions on Sylt
Other cultural sites on Sylt complement Kampen’s nature and beach attractions. In Keitum, the Sylt Museum presents the island’s history through folklore and art, including everyday stories of islanders, seafaring, the Sylt language and art created on Sylt over the centuries. The Altfriesisches Haus since 1640 offers a glimpse into the historic way of life of the island’s inhabitants.
Denghoog is one of Northern Europe’s most impressive and best-preserved megalithic tombs. You can explore it via a six-metre-long passage, through the opening in its roof or virtually on a 3D tour. Visitor arrangements may change; check the latest access information when planning your visit.
