In Eisfeld, medieval castle architecture, collections on local history and a long-standing festival tradition come together. Travellers who enjoy discovering different perspectives on history and culture will find a range of themes here: from museum visits and historic buildings to the established traditions of the Kuhschwanz Festival.

Castle, Collections and Architectural History

At its heart, Eisfeld Castle is a medieval castle complex; today, it houses the town museum. The Eisfeld Museum features an extensive porcelain exhibition, historic workshops, toys, local history and regional folk culture. The Steinmärbel Mill from Truckenthal adds a particularly tangible historical detail: the object dates from 1867 and has been back on display in the permanent exhibition since 2024.

The Otto Ludwig memorial site also brings together a historic location and a collection. It is housed in the Ludwig family’s summer house, built in 1814, and holds collections relating to the life and work of the poet and musician Otto Ludwig, who was born in Eisfeld in 1813. Notable architectural landmarks also include the school building erected in 1575 and later extended, regarded as Thuringia’s second-oldest school building, and the town hall. Above its round entrance portal is a coat-of-arms relief carved from sandstone in 1557. These dates illustrate different chapters of the town’s history, whose appeal is not limited to a single building.

A Long-Standing Festival Programme

The established elements of the Eisfeld Kuhschwanz Festival include the early-morning wake-up call, a historic guard parade with a fire brigade drill, the commander’s ride and the festival procession. The programme brings together different traditions: from the morning opening to the parade and ride, and finally the procession. For trip planning, the festival is a cultural highlight in its own right, alongside the town’s collections and architectural landmarks.

Nearby is the Märbel Mill in Sachsenbrunn, about 4 km from Eisfeld. Opening hours and guided tours can be arranged by appointment; please confirm arrangements with the operator before your visit.

In Hildburghausen District: Landscapes, Museums and Trails

Hildburghausen District is an important part of the Thuringian Forest recreation region. It includes an extensive contiguous woodland area in the Thuringian Forest Nature Park; the Vessertal Biosphere Reserve is another defining feature of the district. In the Rodachaue heath landscape, the observation platform’s roof offers panoramic views across the meadows. Konik horses and Heck cattle contribute to the development of a near-natural landscape there.

Cultural attractions in the district include the Henneberg Museum at Veßra Abbey, a 6-hectare open-air museum. Its four themed areas focus on the history of the abbey, half-timbered architecture and everyday life in the Henneberg region, as well as agricultural technology and sustainability. The German Castle Museum at Heldburg Fortress explores the history and culture of castles in Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day. Its permanent exhibition is laid out as a tour through the entire fortress; along the way, visitors learn how castle architecture changed from one era to the next.

Trails and waterways offer further ways to explore the region. The approximately 7 km Mühlenwanderweg (Mill Trail) in the municipality of Straufhain passes through an area where nine grain and sawmills once operated. Information boards at the former mill sites provide details about the mills. The Werra Valley Cycle Route also runs through the Werra meadows in Hildburghausen District and is especially popular for downstream cycling tours. The Werra Valley is also suitable for hiking and cycling; downstream from Themar, it is also possible to explore by water.

Winter sports enthusiasts can enjoy more than 70 km of cross-country ski trails and numerous ski touring routes in the municipality of Masserberg, including the districts of Heubach, Schnett and Fehrenbach. Trail lengths and grooming conditions may vary by season. When choosing accommodation, you can first decide what you want to focus on: Eisfeld’s castle and town history, or the distinctive nature, museums and outdoor activities of Hildburghausen District.
