Schnett lies on the southern slope of the 780 m-high Simmersberg. From the summit, the panoramic views stretch across Thuringia and Franconia. This gives you a clear point of reference when planning your trip: you can consider mountain views, nature, outdoor activities and local culture as different focal points. The hillside location and far-reaching views make the connection to the landscape tangible; the nature trail, toboggan run and local traditions add further themes to your stay.

Landscape and Activities in Schnett

The nature trail in Schnett also serves as a fitness trail. Nature and exercise come together along the same route. If you would like to include both in your trip plans, the trail offers a clear starting point. There is also a 150 m-long toboggan run on the Simmersberg. Tobogganing depends on snow and the relevant operating conditions. Schnett therefore offers both a trail focused on nature and exercise and a separate activity that depends on the conditions.

Church and Living Traditions

Schnett also offers a range of cultural points of interest. Visitors repeatedly admire the interior paintings in St. Oswald's Church, which are considered unique in the entire region. The Hullefraansnacht takes place every year with the “wild run into the new year.” Local residents, young and old, actively maintain their traditions. A lasting artistic feature in the church and an annual local custom thus stand side by side—two different perspectives on Schnett’s cultural life.

A Different Perspective on Masserberg

The wider destination of Masserberg has a different landscape to offer: it lies directly on the Rennsteig and is surrounded by forest meadows as well as beech and spruce forests. Numerous well-marked hiking trails and the Rennsteig offer opportunities to hike through the Thuringian Forest Nature Park. On the ridge, you can enjoy an easy walk with little change in elevation or take a horse-drawn carriage ride. In the wider region, forests, the ridge and different ways of getting around take center stage.

Masserberg’s cultural history also offers clear points of reference. The present-day Evangelical Mountain Church of Masserberg was consecrated on October 9, 1883, after the church that previously stood there was destroyed by fire in 1880. The “Masserberg Christ King” has been housed in the church since the third Sunday of Advent in 1980. Greiz sculptor Elly-Viola Nahmmacher carved the artwork from a linden trunk; it is 3 m high and 2.65 m wide. The Rennsteigwarte observation tower on the 842 m-high Eselsberg was built in 1974; from the tower, panoramic views extend across the Thuringian Forest and its foothills.
