Reurieth combines views of the Werra Valley with a distinctive geological landscape and a rich architectural history. The Reuriether Felsen offers views across the valley; at the same time, the rock formation is a landslide landscape, similar to the Eingefallener Berg near Themar. The views and geology thus offer two distinct nature-related points of interest.

The Werra, rock formations and trails

The hiking trail known as Brunkel runs along the Werra from Reurieth (DrĂĽbendorf) to Trostadt. The Werra Valley Cycle Route leads from Reurieth towards Grimmelshausen and Themar, passing through Trostadt, a district of the associated municipality. The routes differ in activity and course: the Brunkel focuses on hiking along the river, while the cycle route heads towards Grimmelshausen and Themar.

Since 2003, another hike has been possible on the “Jagdhaus Reurieth-Brünnhoftal” nature trail. Topics include native plants and animals, geology, hunting and history. The trail thus brings together nature and cultural topics in a hiking experience.

Church and traces of history

Reurieth’s church has a late Romanesque chancel tower with a painted vault, a Baroque nave and an extension with a painted wooden ceiling dating from 1596. The church’s architectural history is shaped by its different styles and the precisely dated ceiling design.

A historical reference dates back to 1171: a document mentions the lords of “Rugerit” as owners of a castle. The Schlossmühle is also one of the sights to see on a walk around Reurieth.

In Trostadt, a district of the associated municipality, structural remains of a Premonstratensian convent for canonesses have been preserved. This makes the site a distinct part of the municipality’s history.

More to explore in Hildburghausen district

Hildburghausen district has its own natural setting: it includes a continuous woodland area in the Thuringian Forest Nature Park, and the Vessertal Biosphere Reserve also shapes the district. These regional landscapes complement the Werra and Reurieth’s landslide landscape.

The district’s museums offer other ways to explore history and culture. The Hennebergisches Museum Kloster Veßra is a six-hectare open-air museum with four themed areas: the history of the monastery; half-timbered architecture and everyday life in the Henneberg region; and agricultural technology and sustainability.

The German Castle Museum at Veste Heldburg explores the history and culture of castles in Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day. Its permanent exhibition is designed as a route through the entire fortress. Visitors can learn how castle construction changed from one era to the next and discover Veste Heldburg. The museums have different focuses: VeĂźra on monastic and everyday history, Heldburg on castles in Europe.

Tailor your search to suit the kind of trip you have in mind.
