Hiking trails around Herschdorf

Three hiking car parks are located in Herschdorf and Willmersdorf, directly on the Langer Berg. The suggested circular trail to the Lange Berg monument starts at the Langer Berg hiking car park in Herschdorf. From there, it follows the yellow trail markers to the monument at an elevation of 809 m, then returns to the Herschdorf hiking car park via the panoramic trail. The entire route is about 6 km long. The monument is the specific destination of the loop; the panoramic trail is the designated return route.

The Mushroom Trail leads from Herschdorf in the direction of Neustadt am Rennsteig. Another suggested hiking trail runs from Herschdorf via Dröbischau towards Barigau, following the hiking trail signs. The Thuringian Nature Park Route also passes through Herschdorf; the viewpoints are the deciding factor in this route’s alignment. This gives you a choice of different routes, without all of them leading to the same destination.

Mountain bike tours of varying difficulty are possible on unmarked trails around Herschdorf. The Wichelpfad lies between Herschdorf and Gillersdorf and is suitable for families with children. These options appeal to different interests: the circular trail leads to a named monument, while the Wichelpfad offers an option specifically suited to families. Mountain bike tours, in turn, are available at various difficulty levels.

Church and concerts in Herschdorf

The Church of the Lamb of God on the Langer Berg in Herschdorf was built between 1687 and 1691. Before that, the previous church, which had become too small and dilapidated, was demolished. Concerts of various genres are held in the church from time to time. If you would like to include a concert in your trip, check the specific dates in advance, as events are held only occasionally.

GroĂźbreitenbach: Landscape and architectural history

The wider travel destination of GroĂźbreitenbach is a state-recognized resort. GroĂźbreitenbach lies around 50 kilometres south of Erfurt and about 15 kilometres southeast of Ilmenau. The town extends across a plateau between the Langer Berg, the Schwarza Valley, and the Rennsteig high-altitude hiking trail.

St. Trinity Church in Großbreitenbach has 600 seats and is the largest half-timbered church in Thuringia. It was built from 1679 onwards to replace the dilapidated St. John’s Church. The latter was built in 1570 and collapsed in 1771, with only its church tower remaining. St. Trinity Church was built to the plans of Andreas Rudolphi, the Saxon-Gotha regional master builder, and was consecrated in 1690.

The church is also recognizable by its architectural form: it is entirely clad in slate, and a distinctive hexagonal roof turret sits atop the steep roof of the broad nave. The wooden baptismal font dates from 1677 and was transferred from the old St. John’s Church. Its furnishings therefore tell the story of the previous church, while the architectural design and consecration date place the later church’s construction in context.

When choosing accommodation, you can first consider whether Herschdorf suits your planned mix of hiking, family-friendly trails, and local history. The circular trail starting in Herschdorf, the Wichelpfad between Herschdorf and Gillersdorf, and the local church offer different points of interest. This lets you choose a location based on the activities that matter most for your trip.
