Hohenstein brings together a variety of discoveries: Baroque church architecture, notable reminders of local history and natural sites. Hikers and cyclists can explore the Sandkuhle in the Trebraer Flur. Each place has its own character – from Trebra Church to Sülzensee lake in Mackenrode.

Churches and Historic Details

St. Nicolai Church in Trebra was built around 1700 on the site of its predecessor. It is a Baroque hall church, and its very tall west tower, built of dressed stone blocks, defines its architecture. In Limlingerode, a look inside the church reveals two more distinctive features: a carved baptismal angel dating from around 1710 hovers above the baptismal font. There is also a font from the period of the town’s earliest written mention, in 1233. The organ draws many concertgoers, adding its own cultural note alongside the historic baptismal objects.

St. Bartholomew’s Church in Holbach also has a distinctive architectural feature: built in 1745, it has a tower with a Baroque half-timbered cupola on its south side. The churches are distinguished not only by their histories but also by their striking architectural details.

Natural Sites in Trebra and Mackenrode

The Trebra Peace Oak, also known as the Emperor’s Oak, has been protected since 1988 and designated a natural monument. In Mackenrode, the Sülzensee nature reserve invites visitors to enjoy extended walks. These two places offer different settings for experiencing nature: one is a protected tree, the other a nature reserve that invites you to spend more time exploring.

The Gesundbrunnen spring is in Trebra Forest. There is a shelter with a fire pit and information boards about the history of the site and the forest. At the same spot, a spring with pure water, sheltered by a structure, offers a refreshing stop. The Gesundbrunnen is a popular destination for excursions. The shelter, information boards and spring bring together a woodland visit, local history and nature.

The Sandkuhle in the Trebraer Flur is a former sand quarry. The site has a shelter and views of Lohra Castle. Hikers and cyclists can explore the area, and cars can be parked beside the road. The Sandkuhle offers a different way to spend time outdoors than taking a long walk by SĂĽlzensee lake or visiting the Gesundbrunnen spring.

Tradition and Practical Information

The annual marksmen’s festival is one of Limlingerode’s recurring July traditions. The Limlingerode Marksmen’s Association (Schützenverein Limlingerode e.V.) organizes it with a concert, dancing, a shooting competition and other customs. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the event dates in advance.

The local description of Trebra includes information on road connections: the A 38 and B 243 can be reached from there in ten minutes; Trebra is on the L 2062 and K 14.

For those traveling together, the range offers different interests rather than a single focus: church architecture and the organ in Limlingerode, walks by SĂĽlzensee lake or explorations around the Sandkuhle. When choosing your accommodation, consider which of these interests you want to shape your plans.
