Discover Nordhausen: Museum History and the Southern Harz Landscape
Accommodation in Nordhausen
Nordhausen offers two cultural starting points for planning a trip: the FLOHBURG | Das Nordhausen Museum and the Tabakspeicher. Each has a different focus, from Nordhausen’s history to exhibitions on crafts, trades, industry, and archaeology. The wider Nordhausen destination also encompasses landscapes, rail connections, and regional food and drink. This lets you decide whether your stay should focus more on museum themes or on trails and places in the surrounding region.
Museum History and Technology in Nordhausen
The FLOHBURG | Das Nordhausen Museum presents Nordhausen’s eventful history across three floors, from its beginnings to the present day. Its broad historical scope makes the museum a good starting point for anyone who enjoys viewing historical developments in a wider context. Guided tours are available by arrangement; if you plan to take one, coordinate your visit accordingly.
The Tabakspeicher has a different focus. Across more than 1,000 square metres, the museum presents exhibitions on crafts, trades, industry, and archaeology. Rather than focusing on a single era, it covers several subject areas that explore different aspects of working and everyday life. Special experience areas showcase telecommunications technologies from different centuries. You can also see old projection equipment in a cinema hall—another feature alongside the exhibitions.
The Tabakspeicher’s visitor offerings also include tastings of spirits and chewing tobacco. Before travelling, check whether these are available on your preferred date. The two museums therefore differ not only in their subject matter: the FLOHBURG guides visitors through Nordhausen’s history, while the Tabakspeicher brings together various fields and technical exhibits.
Trails, Railways, and Food and Drink in the Wider Nordhausen Destination
The Karst Hiking Trail is also part of the wider Nordhausen destination. In Nordhausen district, it runs 56 kilometres from east to west. The trail also leads through the Southern Harz gypsum karst landscape, from Lower Saxony through northern Thuringia to Saxony-Anhalt. If you are especially interested in nature and landscapes, this regional perspective offers a clear contrast to Nordhausen’s museum themes.
The Harzquerbahn offers a different geographical perspective: it connects Wernigerode in the northern Harz with Nordhausen in the southern Harz foothills. Alongside the Karst Hiking Trail’s expansive landscape, this railway provides a connection between two places at opposite ends of the Harz.
For an introduction to the local spirits-making tradition, the “Vom Korn zum Korn” tour at the Echter Nordhäuser Traditionsbrennerei takes you through the historic complex and includes a tasting of the distillery’s own premium spirits and liqueurs. Availability depends on the date; check for your preferred date. In the wider Nordhausen destination, the Burggasthof Hohnstein combines upscale traditional cuisine and regional specialities with a setting amid the historic ruins of Hohnstein Castle. From the terrace, the view stretches across Neustadt and the Southern Harz. If you are planning a restaurant visit or want to enjoy the view, check the restaurant’s current opening status before your trip.
When choosing accommodation, it helps to first decide what matters most to you: would you mainly like to explore the museums in Nordhausen, or are you more interested in trails and places in the wider destination?
