Discover Leutenberg
Accommodation in Leutenberg
Discover Leutenberg through its trails, town history and encounters with nature. From numerous vantage points, you can enjoy views of the lovingly preserved old town and its surroundings. Hiking routes, a pilgrimage trail and historic sites each offer a different focus. When looking for accommodation in Leutenberg, you can plan your stay around these interests: would you rather spend your time on longer hikes, exploring the historic townscape, or visiting places of natural and cultural interest?
Hiking trails of varying lengths
There is an extensive network of hiking trails in Leutenberg and the surrounding area. Four circular trails start and finish in the market square: Circular Trail 2 is 12.0 kilometres long, Circular Trail 3 measures 14.5 kilometres, Circular Trail 4 is 13.3 kilometres long, and Circular Trail 6 covers 15.1 kilometres. These distances offer a straightforward way to compare the circular trails. Circular Trail 5 offers a different route: it links Leutenberg, Herschdorf, Landsendorf and Dorfilm in a 16.3-kilometre loop.
A shorter option is the Leutenberg Primeval Forest Trail, which is just under 7 kilometres long. There are rest areas and viewpoints along the trail. Also bear these limitations in mind when planning: the trail is not accessible to people with reduced mobility and is not suitable for cycling. The children’s hiking trail “Following the Salamander’s Trail” is a circular route and educational trail with many stations for play and learning. These trails therefore offer different experiences: circular routes and their distances, rest areas and views, or a combination of learning and play.
The Sormitz Trail runs from Lichtentanne station through the Sormitz Valley and past the Nature Park House to Leutenberg’s market square, then continues to Hockeroda; the route is 13.1 kilometres long. The Way of St James offers another route: it passes through Leutenberg between the Lemnitz Valley and Rosenthal. You can therefore include circular routes, an educational trail and a pilgrimage trail as different ways of hiking in your travel plans.
Old town, museum and town church
Leutenberg’s historic town centre features an ensemble around the market square. The local history museum is a few metres from the square, at the end of a side street. Its first section is devoted to local and town history, Friedensburg Castle, the Counts of Schwarzburg-Leutenberg and the descendants of the Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt princes. The museum also preserves an original cobbler’s workshop. The present-day town church of St Mary Magdalene was built in the Neoclassical style from 1812 to 1815. The museum, market square ensemble and town church each offer a different way to explore Leutenberg’s history.

If you are considering different tours, these materials can serve as a practical basis for further planning. The trail distances, starting and finishing points, and cultural and natural history themes mentioned here offer various ways to plan your days around your interests.
