The landscape of the district of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt stretches from the Saale Valley to the Thuringian Forest. Along the hiking trails, quiet forests and sweeping views meet cultural and historic sights. Cycling routes and the Saale, with canoe and raft trips, also shape the possibilities for a day out. For your trip, you can focus on getting active outdoors, a cycling tour, experiences on the water or cultural destinations—depending on what you would like to discover.

Hiking between the Saale Valley and the Thuringian Forest

The Hohenwarte Reservoir Trail is a quality hiking trail in the district of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt certified by the German Hiking Association. It offers a nature experience on well-marked routes. The hiking landscape complements this tour with quiet forests, sweeping views and cultural and historic sights along the trails.

The Uhlstädter Heide comprises a 1,082-hectare nature reserve. There are well-signposted hiking trails, well-maintained paths, benches and shelters. The church ruins of Töpfersdorf lie in the heath, on the territory of Zeutsch; they have long been a popular hiking destination. Another striking landmark is the Luisenturm: built in 1864, it stands on the Hummelsberg near Kleinkochberg, which rises to over 500 metres. From there, views extend across the Saale Valley, the Saale-Ilm Plateau and the ridges of the Franconian Forest and the Thuringian Forest.

Cycling routes with different highlights

In the district, the Saale Cycle Route combines nature and culture with well-developed cycling infrastructure. One specific route is the Saale Cycle Hiking Trail, which runs through the Uhlstädt-Kirchhasel districts of Weißen, Uhlstädt, Zeutsch and Niederkrossen. If you would like to plan your cycling around a route through these places, this provides clear guidance.

The technically challenging Feen Bike Trail is suitable for experienced cyclists. The Schiefergebirgs-Trophy also offers a different kind of challenge: its demanding cycling routes require strength and skill. This makes it easy to distinguish cycling options with a focus on nature and culture from routes where technical difficulty is explicitly the main attraction.

Canoe trips and raft rides on the Saale

Relaxed or sporty canoe trips through unspoilt landscapes are possible on the Saale in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt area. You can rent boats at various locations; guided tours and raft rides are also available. Individual operators’ offerings may vary seasonally.

Raft rides between Kirchhasel and Uhlstädt can be booked from April to October. If a ride like this is important to your plans, check the available dates in advance. Canoe and raft trips offer different ways to include the Saale in your journey—from paddling at your own pace to travelling by raft.

Discover cultural destinations and history

Kochberg Castle is a Goethe memorial site run by the Klassik Stiftung Weimar and was once the residence of Charlotte von Stein. The Schauenforst Castle ruins offer a different perspective on the landscape: they are a landmark of the Hexengrund, an idyllic side valley of the Saale between Zeutsch and Schmieden. Both destinations add a cultural focus to your trip without taking hiking or the Saale out of the picture.

The rafting museum near Uhlstädt’s sports centre displays mementos of rafting on the Saale. In Saalfeld, the ruins of Hoher Schwarm are about a five-minute walk from the market square. These destinations complement the outdoor experiences with different historical points of interest: the castle, castle ruins, museum and town ruins each appeal to a different interest.

Choose a base that suits your plans

Choose where to stay based on the activities you would like to plan. This turns the district’s variety into a practical decision about the right base, rather than trying to fit every experience into a single day’s itinerary.

For regional train travel, Uhlstädt station offers hourly connections to Rudolstadt or Jena. If train connections are important to your plans, check the timetable before setting off. It is also worth checking dates for raft rides, as bookable trips between Kirchhasel and Uhlstädt are limited to the period from April to October.
