Küllstedt combines a distinctive local history with trails through the surrounding landscape. The townscape is notable for its many half-timbered houses; key places to visit include the parish church of St. George and Juliana, the Boniface Cross and the chestnut avenue, a protected natural monument. There is also a cycle route, named hiking trails and other sights. You can shape your stay around your interests, combining architecture, history and outdoor activities as you wish.

Church, Half-Timbered Houses and Local History

The parish church of St. George and Juliana is the largest village church in the Eichsfeld. Built in 1930, it has a Baroque high altar dating from 1756. The two dates mark distinct points in history: the altar predates the church building. The church is also part of the Südeichsfeld Nativity Scene Trail. A house nativity scene exhibition is held annually along this trail; specific exhibition dates may vary.

The Boniface Cross is another historic landmark in Küllstedt and dates from the 11th century. For a different architectural impression from that of the church, take a look at the town’s many half-timbered houses. The Stations of the Cross, with its Mount of Olives grottoes and St. Anthony’s Chapel, is also among Küllstedt’s sights. Together, these places offer different ways to explore history and religious culture, without requiring your visit to focus on any one theme.

The local history room is at Pfarrer-Horstkemper-Platz 4, 37359 Küllstedt. You can arrange a visit by calling 036075 56891. Be sure to book an appointment in advance.

Cycle Routes, Tunnels and Hikes

A cycle route approximately 33 kilometres long follows the disused Leinefelde–Treysa railway line. It runs through Küllstedt and Lengenfeld unterm Stein to Frieda on the Werra. This makes Küllstedt a convenient stop on a longer route, while also giving the town its own place along the way. The Küllstedt Tunnel is also on the Kanonenbahn cycle route. At 1,530 metres, it is the longest of the five railway tunnels along this cycle route.

The TOP Westerwald Trail is a named hiking route in Küllstedt. Another circular trail goes over the Madeberg, the Küllstedt locals’ home mountain, which rises to 498.4 metres.

A handcar changeover station is located at the former Küllstedt railway station. If you would like to include it in your plans, check current operating and booking options in advance. The station is another railway-related feature of the town, while cycle and hiking trails offer other ways to explore Küllstedt actively.

Culture and Landscapes in the Eichsfeld

Beyond Küllstedt, the Eichsfeld also has destinations for exploring cultural history. Bodenstein Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1098 and stands on a mountain spur in the Ohm Mountains. Regular guided tours there explore the history of the former lords of the castle, the von Wintzingerode family. You can also visit the small chapel with its baptismal angel. This regional example adds another historic setting in the Eichsfeld to Küllstedt’s local history.

Küllstedt brings together specific points of interest for all three interests: historic details in the town, a cycle route that passes through Küllstedt, and named hiking trails including the Madeberg. This lets you choose accommodation that suits the focus of your trip, without committing to a particular itinerary.
