Lakes, salt meadows, a cycle path and traces of different historical periods give Barchfeld-Immelborn several distinct facets. When planning your trip, you can focus on nature watching, time by the water or culture. The accommodation you look for therefore depends on what you want your days to revolve around: an outing to the lakes, a closer look at nature and birdlife, or local history.

Lakes, protected areas and birdlife

The “Kiesgrube Immelborn” recreation centre consists of two separate lakes, divided by a road. There are sunbathing lawns along the shores, with individual trees providing shade. Water and open green spaces are thus at the heart of this recreation area.

The “Erlensee-Salzwiesen” natural monument lies on the boundary between Immelborn and Dorf Allendorf. It is protected for its abundance of salt-tolerant plants and specialised insects, which are rare in the region. Alongside the lakes, visitors here can discover a distinctive world of plants and insects.

The Forstloch-Riedwiesen nature reserve also has several information boards and a designated circular trail. A total of 192 bird species have been recorded in the area, making it one of the most species-rich places in southern Thuringia. The information boards, circular trail and birdlife each offer a different focus for visitors who want to experience nature and learn about the area.

Exploring by bike and train

A triathlon and the Kiesseeschwimmen swim take place at the gravel pit every year. Anyone can take part in the Kiesseeschwimmen. If you want to combine your trip with one of the events, check the latest dates in advance.

The Werratal cycle path runs directly through Barchfeld. In Immelborn, the stork’s nest is on a listed former brickworks chimney right beside the cycle path. A trip through Barchfeld-Immelborn can therefore bring together cycling and local history as distinct themes. On the route between Eisenach and Meiningen, the Südthüringer Bahn stops at Immelborn station several times a day. Check the current timetable for your travel date.

Church, cemetery and castle dungeon

The Amalienkirche in Immelborn was built in 1473 and dedicated to Saint Amalia. In Barchfeld, the Jewish cemetery on NĂĽrnberger StraĂźe has been in existence since 1853; around 80 simple sandstone gravestones remain there today. The church and cemetery offer different perspectives on local history.

Another glimpse into the past awaits at the dungeon of the Steinsches Schloss in Barchfeld. Religious and secular scenes survive in relief carvings, including scenes of the Crucifixion and a view of Jerusalem, as well as depictions of knights, hunting and animals. Visits can be arranged by prior agreement.

The Malsch & Volkert industrial monument offers another way to explore the past: its machinery is still operational and can be demonstrated during tours. If you would like to plan a demonstration, it is advisable to enquire in advance.
