Vacha – Werra, Half-Timbered Houses and Wendelstein Castle
Accommodation in Vacha
In Vacha, the 225-metre-long “Bridge of Unity,” with its 14 arches, crosses the Werra from Vacha in Thuringia to Philippsthal in Hesse. Together with the half-timbered buildings, the castle museum and the cycling routes, it gives the town a distinctive blend of riverside scenery, history and activity.
Market Square, Half-Timbered Houses and Town History
The town hall, “Die Widemark,” is a defining feature of Vacha’s medieval market square and was built in 1613. The half-timbered buildings also tell the story of a long architectural history: the oldest in Vacha date from the 15th century. For a stay focused on architecture, several different historical highlights are therefore close together—from the town hall on the market square to the town’s older half-timbered houses.
Since 1986, the town museum has been housed in the medieval halls of Wendelstein Castle. Its topics include Vacha’s development and town history, as well as crafts, trades and industry. The exhibitions also explore rural domestic culture and document the Border Remembrance Trail; there is also a doll collection and an outdoor exhibition in the courtyard. The doll collection is one of the largest in Thuringia. The castle hall also features displays on the history of Vacha’s Jewish community and the German Peasants’ War. Agricultural equipment made in Vacha can be seen in the castle courtyard.
The former keep offers a different view of the castle complex, with panoramic views over Vacha and the Werra Valley. At the southern edge of town, the remains of the Servite monastery preserve Gothic wall paintings. Vacha thus offers several ways to explore the past: town and everyday history in the museum, architectural landmarks in the townscape, and medieval paintings at the monastery.
Events and Swimming Pool
Carnival, the Kirmes fair, Vitus Market and Herzermarkt are among Vacha’s traditional events. If you would like to plan your stay around one of them, check the relevant dates in advance. When planning accommodation, it helps to keep your preferred focus in mind: town history and the market square offer their own attractions alongside the events held throughout the year.
Vacha outdoor swimming pool is on the green outskirts of town, a few minutes from the centre, and can be reached by car or by bicycle from the Werra Valley Cycle Route. It has a 50-metre swimming pool, a one-metre diving board, two three-metre diving platforms and a five-metre diving platform. The different pool and diving dimensions offer a practical point of reference if swimming is to be part of your trip. If you are planning a day at the pool, check the current opening hours.
Cycling and Pilgrimage Routes, Walks Nearby
Vacha is a junction for the south–north Rhön Route and the Ulster and Werra Valley cycle routes. Another option for route planning is the approximately 14-kilometre Berka–Vacha cycle route, which directly connects Vacha, Berka/Werra and Gerstungen.
The Ecumenical Pilgrims’ Way also leads to Vacha: it connects Görlitz in Saxony with the Thuringian town and forms part of the Way of St James to Santiago de Compostela. The Vacha Pilgrims’ Hostel is located in the Kemenate at Kirchplatz 8, in the town centre and directly on the pilgrims’ route. The town centre and the outdoor pool on the green outskirts offer different focal points for planning your trip.
The Vacha branch of the Rhön Club regularly offers guided walks in the surrounding area and further afield, and maintains the regional trail network. Nearby, Oechsenberg and neighbouring Dietrichsberg are described as the northernmost peaks of the Rhön; their history goes back to Celtic settlement. On the lower plateau of Oechsenberg, the Vacha association runs a hiking hut on a voluntary basis at an elevation of 594 metres above sea level.
More Places to Explore in Wartburgkreis
Those looking beyond Vacha to the wider Wartburgkreis destination can add other distinct themes to their travel plans. Creuzburg, which is over 830 years old, is one of Germany’s larger Romanesque castle complexes, with a ring wall more than 340 metres in circumference enclosing an area of 7,400 square metres. Schloss Altenstein Park has around 20 kilometres of park trails, including a 4.3-kilometre circular walk.
Cultural and contemporary history offer further highlights there: Schloss Altenstein houses a Brahms memorial site with an exhibition of letters and printed works documenting the close relationship between Johannes Brahms and Duke Georg II of Saxe-Meiningen. Point Alpha Memorial is an authentic Cold War site; in the House on the Border, a permanent exhibition presents the history of the division of Germany. These places broaden the picture of Wartburgkreis without replacing Vacha’s own town history.
