Discover Dankmarshausen
Accommodation in Dankmarshausen
Dankmarshausen combines village history with nature experiences in the surrounding area. In the village, a late Gothic sandstone church defines the skyline; nearby lies the Rhäden, a wetland between Dankmarshausen and Obersuhl. The local history museum, bakehouse and parish well add insights into living, work and local memories to these impressions.
The Rhäden: Floodplain Landscape and Birdlife
The Rhäden Nature Reserve covers 240 hectares of floodplain landscape and is of statewide importance as a breeding and resting area and as a habitat for numerous bird species. The wetland is of regional importance for many breeding birds; for migratory birds on the western route, it is one of the most important resting areas in Hesse and Thuringia.
A cycling route runs around the Rhäden, with several observation hides and informative panels for all age groups. The landscape and birdlife are therefore as much a part of the nature experience as the information about the area. The hides and panels offer different ways to engage with the route: you can take in the surroundings while also learning more about their significance.
Village Church and Local History
Built in 1431, the late Gothic sandstone church defines Dankmarshausen’s skyline and is considered a gem among the region’s village churches. Its construction date, late Gothic style and sandstone shape its character; its regional significance makes it a notable attraction for anyone interested in historic village churches.
The Dankmarshausen local history museum features a living room, a kitchen and a bedroom, as well as displays on shoemaking, tailoring, baking, saddlery, agriculture and sheep farming. The living spaces focus on domestic life; the other displays broaden this perspective to include crafts and agriculture. This allows visitors to explore everyday life in the village through different rooms and activities.
Next to the local history museum, a bakehouse was set up in a vacant half-timbered house. In front of the rectory, the parish well recalls the meeting place where villagers came to fetch water in the 16th century. Here, a specific shared activity is at the heart of local memory. The church, built in 1431, and the water carriers’ meeting place in the 16th century mark different periods in the village’s history.
