Fürth is a state-recognized health resort located within the Geo-Nature Park. Artworks along hiking trails, themed paths in Fürth Forest and the history of Walburgis Chapel add a variety of accents to your stay. You can tailor your time to the interests that appeal to you most: art, exercise, nature or historical traditions.

Art Trails and Hiking Routes

The four-kilometer Sparkassenstiftung Starkenburg art trail is lined with abstract sculptures and leads as far as Lindenfels. The Fürth Art Trail is a separate route: it features artworks created by ten artists in 2007 at the initiative of the Sparkassenstiftung Starkenburg. The two trails therefore offer different connections to art.

The 9.73-kilometer Art Bench Trail follows its own route. It runs around the Mehrgenerationenpark Steinbachwiesen in Fürth, climbs toward Wagenberg, then follows the edge of the forest toward the Altlechterner Valley and Erzberg. Galgenhohl in Kröckelbach is the turning point; from there, the trail leads back to Steinbach. Check the route locally before setting out.

The 13-kilometer Wagenberg hike runs mostly through mixed forest between Fürth and Hammelbach. Along the way, there are views of Fürth and the Weschnitz Valley. The Kahlberg Loop is a nature trail only. Route length, the amount of forest and the connection to art help distinguish the hikes by their respective focus, without reducing them to a single kind of hiking experience.

Forest Trails and Guided Themed Activities

Fürth Forest has a bee education trail, a forest education trail and a fitness trail. Their names point to different themes: bees, knowledge about the forest and exercise. Mountain biking circuits are also available within Fürth’s municipal area, adding cycling trips to the range of options alongside hiking trails.

In Weschnitz, a district of Fürth, the Forsthaus Almen forest education center is the starting point for tours on geology and soil science, historic mining and the craft of charcoal burning. Since 2010, a dedicated team has been offering guided hikes and themed talks in Fürth. Specific tour offerings may vary; check the current program if you are planning a particular guided tour or talk.

Pilgrimage and Other Culture

Walburgis Chapel is located above Weschnitz. Pilgrimages there have been recorded since the Carolingian period. Every year on May 1, a joint, solemn service is held at the chapel, drawing many Christians on pilgrimage from throughout the Weschnitz Valley and from the Bergstraße. If you would like to include this date in your travel plans, check the program for that year.

The Odenwald Model Railway Exhibition is another of Fürth’s attractions: it has been in the municipality since 2008. Alongside the art trails, forest activities and chapel, it offers a range of options that give different weight to nature experiences and culture.

Choosing Between Fürth and the Bergstraße

The Bergstraße is a wider travel destination with its own scenic and culinary highlights. In the Bergstraße district, gentle vineyards meet the Odenwald. Riesling is the Bergstraße’s characteristic white grape variety, while Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) dominates the red wine category. Visitors can sample Roter Riesling and other Bergstraße specialties directly from producers, in wine taverns or at wine festivals.

A cultural visit to the Bergstraße also leads to Lorsch: Lorsch Abbey was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991. The abbey contains one of the best-preserved Carolingian buildings north of the Alps.
