Einhausen has two distinctive features: the Weschnitz, which has been undergoing renaturation in the town centre since 2006, and the historic Old Town Hall, next to the building dating from the 1970s. Breeding sites for kingfishers and moorhens have been recorded in the expanding habitat along the Weschnitz. The landscape of the Einhäuser Bruch and paths for walking and exercise round out the picture.

The Weschnitz and Einhäuser Bruch

Strolling along the Weschnitz promenade in Einhausen offers a good view of the changes to the riverbed. The Einhäuser Bruch presents a different kind of landscape: in old river channels, about two to three metres lower than their surroundings, wet and acidic meadows alternate with carr, marsh and alluvial forests. Among other species, these areas are home to common spadefoot toads and natterjack toads, as well as more than 23 bird species. The variety of habitats gives nature in Einhausen more than one face—from the riverbed in the town centre to the lower-lying old channels in the Bruch.

A specific place to take a break is the rest area by the “Red Cross” wayside shrine, where seating is available beneath a large weeping willow. You can pause there and take in the wayside shrine. The Weschnitz promenade, meanwhile, offers an opportunity to notice the changes to the riverbed as you walk. Each place has its own appeal, without requiring you to follow a set itinerary.

Town halls and bridge history

The historic Old Town Hall and the new town hall, built in the 1970s, stand side by side in the market square. The contrast is clear even within this small space: an older town hall stands directly beside a building from a later era. Anyone interested in townscapes and architectural history will find an easy-to-see comparison here, without needing to mentally connect different locations.

The Wattenheim Bridge is also near Einhausen: a stone bridge dating from the late 18th century that crosses the Weschnitz. It is located within the municipal area of Lorsch, outside Einhausen. This distinction matters if you plan to visit the bridge: it is part of the area around the destination, not Einhausen’s town centre.

Cycling routes and exercise in the countryside

For a longer bike ride, the Ried Family Cycling Route connects Einhausen with GroĂź-Rohrheim, Biblis, BĂĽrstadt and Lampertheim. The route is about 60 kilometres long. This makes it a different kind of activity from a walk along the Weschnitz promenade: rather than focusing on a single local feature, it follows a route through five municipalities. The approximate total distance helps you factor the time and physical effort involved into your plans, without assuming a particular riding time.

The Trimm-Dich-Pfad fitness trail, over 2.4 kilometres long, is located west of Einhausen. It runs through the Jägersburger Wald over Ice Age sand dunes and among old stands of oak, beech and pine. Exercise equipment along the route can be used at any time. If you prefer to combine exercise with a walk through the woods, this is another option to a cycling tour between several municipalities. The landscapes along the way—sand dunes and various old tree stands—are as much a part of the trail as the equipment.

More to explore in the BergstraĂźe region

In the wider Bergstraße travel region, gentle vineyards meet the Odenwald. For a different blend of scenery and culture, consider these separate destinations: Heppenheim’s “Wine & Stone” Experience Trail is about 6.9 kilometres long and has around 70 information stations. During the annual autumn hike on 3 October, hikers can enjoy wine and food at five stations in the vineyards from 10 am to 6 pm. Check the event details before your trip.

Lorsch Abbey is another cultural highlight in the Bergstraße region. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991, and one of the best-preserved Carolingian buildings north of the Alps is located there. Families can explore activities, puzzles and experiments on their own at the Lauresham open-air laboratory with a discovery kit. Check the relevant opening conditions when planning your visit. These examples complement Einhausen’s river and Bruch landscapes with wine and cultural experiences elsewhere in the wider travel region, without presenting them as features of the town itself.

Choose the right base

If your plans also include destinations in the BergstraĂźe region, you can factor them in as a separate part of your trip. Then narrow your search to the places that matter for your stay, and check the location of accommodation against your specific plans.
