Poppenhausen (Wasserkuppe) offers several distinct highlights for a stay: on Calvary Hill, the Stations of the Cross, places of remembrance and views over the town come together. The Poppenhausen Art Trail offers a different focus: sculptures by artists from Germany and abroad line its 2 km hiking route, which also offers panoramic views across the “Land of Open Horizons”. Nearby, Guckaisee lake and Steinwand add to the choice.

Calvary Hill: Stations of the Cross, chapel and views

On the way to the summit of Calvary Hill, a Way of the Cross leads past individual stations. At the end of the route is a stone chapel, built in memory of the plague of 1736. Calvary Hill is also home to a lovingly designed Marian grotto. A crucifixion group offers views over Poppenhausen. Together, these sites place religious remembrance and views of the town at the center—a different focus from the artworks along the hiking route.

Art Trail and Hochrhöner

The Poppenhausen Art Trail is a 2 km hiking route featuring sculptures by artists from Germany and abroad. It offers panoramic views across the “Land of Open Horizons”. The Hochrhöner is on a different scale: it is one of eight premium long-distance trails in Hesse, runs for 173 km between Bad Kissingen and Bad Salzungen, and passes through the Poppenhausen area via the Wasserkuppe. You can therefore compare two different types of hiking route: a 2 km trail with artworks and panoramic views, and a 173 km route between two endpoints.
