Discover Rasdorf: Anger, fortified cemetery and Point Alpha
Accommodation in Rasdorf
Rasdorf combines a large village green with medieval defensive architecture and the history of the Cold War. The Anger, the fortified cemetery and Point Alpha each offer a distinct cultural perspective. The “Der Rasdorfer” premium circular trail complements these themes with a circular hike through varied landscapes and past sights from different eras. This lets you focus your trip on history or plan the hike as a separate day out.
Anger and fortified cemetery
Rasdorf’s Anger is 170 metres long and 75 metres wide; it is the largest village green in Hesse. As the centre of the village, it provides a clear landmark. The Anger is also one of the possible starting points for the “Der Rasdorfer” premium circular trail. Another possible starting point is the Point Alpha Memorial.
The medieval fortified cemetery is distinguished by a high wall and four defensive towers with loopholes. Together, these features bring the site’s defensive character to life. An information pillar at the cemetery tells visitors about the former church building. A QR code provides an audio file with further information about the church and the fortified cemetery. The architecture and explanations therefore offer different ways to explore the site: you can focus on the complex itself or on the history of the church building and cemetery.
Point Alpha and the history of the border
Until 1989, Point Alpha was the U.S. Army’s most important observation post along the former inner German border. At the U.S. Camp Point Alpha, the “Cold War” exhibition explores the history, military life and strategic importance of Point Alpha. The “Everyday Life” exhibition, by contrast, looks at how people in the Hessian border region lived alongside American soldiers. Together, these topics present both a military and a societal perspective on the history of the border.
The “Der Rasdorfer” premium circular trail
The circular trail passes through varied landscapes and by sights from different historical periods. It is marked with a large red “R”. The trail is 15.5 kilometres long, takes around five hours, is of moderate difficulty and has 368 metres of elevation gain. Its length and duration help you estimate how much time to allow; the difficulty level and elevation gain give you a sense of the physical demands. When planning your hike, you can choose between starting at the Anger in the centre of the village or at the Point Alpha Memorial.
The surrounding landscape
In the wider area around Rasdorf, nine closely clustered basalt cones form the Hessian Kegelspiel. They are remnants of former volcanoes or volcanic vents, shaped by weathering. This geological ensemble broadens the focus from Rasdorf’s buildings and exhibitions to the origins of the surrounding landscape.
