Neuhof brings together cycling routes, themed walks and local history as different reasons to visit. The R3 runs right through the town center, trails explore space and potash mining, and a visible section of the Via Regia is once again part of the Way of St. James. You can tailor your trip to active routes, fascinating themes or historical impressions.

Cycling through Neuhof

The Hessian long-distance cycle route R3, also known as the Rhine-Main-Kinzig Cycle Route, runs from Rüdesheim am Rhein to Tann in the Hessian Rhön and passes right through the town center of Neuhof. The route gives cycling a clear connection to the town: your route does not simply pass through the region, but directly through its center.

The Neuhof pump track offers a different cycling experience. It is located at the edge of town toward Dorfborn, right beside the R3, has a separate kids' track and is designed to be accessible, so wheelchair users can use it too. The long-distance cycle route and pump track thus represent different aspects of cycling in Neuhof.

Themed trails about space and potash mining

Opened in 1999, the Planet Trail connects Neuhof and Kalbach, is about ten kilometers long and shares facts about the Sun, moons, planets and comets at eleven information panels. It begins above the large bus parking lot at Johannes Kepler School, by the Sun panel. You can explore the astronomy theme from the stated starting point and follow it along the route.

The anniversary themed hiking trail “The Kali Trail,” established in 2023, focuses on a different subject. The 17.4-kilometer circular route starts in the town center and forms a wide loop around the municipality; it is intended for both locals and tourists. Five information panels cover potash mining in Neuhof and the Fulda/Werra potash mining region. Topics include the history of the Neuhof mine, work above and below ground, geology and the uses of potash products.

The two themed trails differ both in subject and in their format and length: the Planet Trail connects Neuhof and Kalbach over around ten kilometers, while the Kali Trail is a 17.4-kilometer circular route around the municipality. This gives you a concrete comparison when choosing between space-related themes and industrial history, or between the two stated route lengths.

Panoramic trails and notable waypoints

The Opperzer Berg Panorama Trail passes the bee education center, the Marien Grotto and St. Michael's Church. The Fliedetal+Kemmete Panorama Trail follows different stretches: it runs along the Fliede toward Neuhof, over a green path above the motorway tunnel with benches and striking views, and then through Neuhof back to Dallesplatz. These route descriptions provide specific points of reference for including different routes and their named stops in your travel plans.

Via Regia, moated castle and carnival

A visible old section of the Via Regia between Neuhof-Ellers and Fulda is once again part of the Way of St. James toward Frankfurt. Neuhof Moated Castle was originally built as a castle and fortified around 1250 by Prince-Abbot Heinrich IV of Erthal (1249–1261) with new walls, fences and ditches. Carnival is also part of local cultural life: it is celebrated in the municipality of Neuhof with great dedication and imagination.

In the wider destination of Fulda

The wider destination of Fulda also offers further themes for planning your trip. The Rhön in the district of Fulda offers opportunities for hiking and cycling; the Wasserkuppe is Hesse's highest mountain and one of the district of Fulda's most prominent landmarks. The work of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve also enriches the educational landscape in the district of Fulda. This includes Junior and Senior Ranger programs, the certification of biosphere schools and daycare centers, and hundreds of events every year, including nature and adventure tours and markets.

The cultural program in the wider destination of Fulda also includes the Kultursommer Main-Kinzig-Fulda, which has been held for more than 27 years. The festival supports more than 100 events in music, theater, art exhibitions, literature and other fields. The venues are spread across the Main-Kinzig district and the district of Fulda.
