Bad Hersfeld: Abbey Ruins, Old Town and Spa Park
Accommodation in Bad Hersfeld
Bad Hersfeld combines the abbey ruins, a historic old town and the spa park, offering a variety of ways to experience culture and enjoy being active. The town’s history is reflected in medieval buildings and listed houses; outdoors, options range from the spa park to paths through the Fulda floodplain and along Lake Fulda. This lets you tailor your stay to your own interests rather than limiting yourself to just one way of exploring.
Festivals and Historic Buildings
The abbey ruins are the largest Romanesque church ruins in the world. Since 1951, the Bad Hersfeld Festival has drawn theatre enthusiasts to this venue every year between July and September. If you would like to plan your trip around the performances, check the specific festival dates. The ruins and the annual theatre programme bring together architectural history and a recurring cultural event.
The historic old town also invites you to take a closer look at its individual buildings: more than 200 listed buildings can be visited there. The Klausturm is one of the few surviving towers of the medieval town fortifications, which originally comprised 16 towers. The Museum of the City of Bad Hersfeld is housed in the surviving monastery building of the former abbey. Another museum commemorates the life and work of Konrad Duden: it opened in 1999 in his former home at Neumarkt 31, next to the Old Monastery School. Visits are possible by telephone appointment only.
The Four Seasons Spa Park
At around seven hectares, the Four Seasons Spa Park is Bad Hersfeld’s largest contiguous green space and is flanked by the town hall and spa house. Its history dates back to its establishment in 1906; it underwent major renovations in 2006/2007 and was completed in May 2008. The Magic Spring is considered unique. It symbolises Bad Hersfeld’s healing springs and the town’s long spa and bathing tradition. The park thus brings together landscaped green space and a distinctive symbol of the local spa history.
Paths for Different Interests
For a circular route through the southwest and town centre, the Katharinenweg starts at the Katharinenturm of the same name. A public climb of the tower takes place at 3 p.m. on the first Friday of every month; check the date before your visit. The 2.1 km forest fitness trail offers something different: its stations are designed to strengthen and stretch muscles and improve coordination. At the start is a Kneipp facility that can be used from spring through autumn. A stroll through town, fitness stations and a seasonally available Kneipp facility thus offer different ways to get active.
The Fulda floodplain is crossed by, among others, the Fulda Cycle Path, the German Unity Cycle Route and the Luther Pilgrimage Route. Lake Fulda also has an accessible circular path, opened in 2020, with equipment for engaging different senses. At the beginning is an information board that can also be read in Braille. These options have different focuses: the Katharinenweg passes through urban areas, while the path around Lake Fulda, with its sensory equipment, offers a different way to enjoy the outdoors.
Festival Traditions in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg Destination
Bad Hersfeld is also home to the Lullusfest, in the wider Hersfeld-Rotenburg destination. It has been celebrated every year without interruption since 852, during the week of 16 October, in honour of the town’s founder, Lullus. This gives you a clear distinction when choosing when to travel: the festival takes place between July and September, while the Lullusfest is held during the week of 16 October.
