Ludwigsau – Trails, Water and Besengrund
Accommodation in Ludwigsau
Ludwigsau offers a variety of ways to shape your trip: hiking trails, a memorial site in the Seulingswald forest, a historic broom-making tradition and destinations for cycling and wheeled sports. If you are travelling together, you can weigh up the options according to your group’s interests – such as culture, exercise or nature.
Culture, remembrance and local history
The aviation memorial in the Seulingswald forest is a monument to reconciliation and international understanding. It is located two kilometres east of Friedlos at the junction of the X17 Fuldahöhenweg and the +32 Nadelöhrweg. If you plan to include the site in a hike, check the trail markings on site before setting out.
Ludwigseck Castle lies between Beenhausen, Ersrode and Sterkelshausen. It is currently owned by the von und zu Gilsa family. If you plan to visit, check the ownership arrangements before making plans. Local cultural history can also be read in a place name: the Rohrbach valley is known as Besengrund. The name recalls the historic production of brooms by local workers and small farmers.
Hiking trails and scenery
In the centre of Tann, the Rohrbach and Biedebach streams meet. There is also an information board with a town plan and hiking map; check before travelling whether these are available on site. The X3 passes through Tann. Check its markings before setting off so that your plans are based on the current route.
Landscape destinations in different locations include the Fuldaaue nature reserve, with a restored gravel pit near Mecklar, and the Malchustal landscape conservation area near Ersrode. The Fuldaaue nature reserve, with a restored gravel pit, lies near Mecklar; the Malchustal landscape conservation area is near Ersrode.
Cycling and other recreational activities
The Beisetal-Mühlen cycle route begins at the source of the Beise in Hainrode, a district of Ludwigsau, and runs to the Fulda near Beiseförth. This clearly identifies the start and end points for planning your route; check trail conditions and signage before setting off.
In Rohrbach, there is a covered water-treading pool directly on the R12. Benches, tables and bicycle stands are also part of the facility. If you plan to stop at the pool, check its condition and seasonal availability on site beforehand.
There is a pump track in Rohrbach and a dirt track in Meckbach for mountain bikers, skateboarders, scooter riders and inline skaters of all ages. These facilities differ from a route such as the Beisetal-MĂĽhlen cycle route: here, the focus is on local sports facilities, while the latter is a cycling route with a defined start and end point. Ask locally about condition, access and safety requirements.
Getting there and planning accommodation
Friedlos has a railway station on the Bebra–Fulda line, served by Cantus regional service R5. Bus route 320 also regularly connects all of Ludwigsau’s districts with Bad Hersfeld. As timetables and connections may change, check the information for your travel date.
In the wider travel destination of Hersfeld-Rotenburg
For additional cultural events, consider visiting Bad Hersfeld in the wider travel destination of Hersfeld-Rotenburg: the Bad Hersfeld Festival has been held annually in the abbey ruins since 1951.
