Discover Hüttenberg: village history and nature experiences
Accommodation in Hüttenberg
Farm history, a historic craft workshop, studio culture and a nature trail: Hüttenberg offers a range of themes around which you can plan your stay. The destinations differ not only in what they offer, but also in their timing. A furnished farmhouse, an annual Sunday celebration in August and a seasonal cultural programme offer different ideas for planning your trip.
Farm history at Gottfried’s House
Gottfried’s House in Rechtenbach is a farmstead that members of the Rechtenbach Culture and Heritage Association renovated and furnished over a period of three years. Since 1992, the house has been furnished as a farmhouse, with a working kitchen, bedroom and living room. The rooms reflect how the residents once used them and illustrate different aspects of everyday life at the time: the working kitchen sits alongside the rooms for sleeping and living.
“A Day at Gottfried’s” is a special occasion. It is celebrated every year on a Sunday in August. Visitors can experience a day of village life as it was in the past. If you would like to include this festival day in your travel plans, check the date for the relevant year.
Museum and seasonal culture
The Hüttenberg Local History Museum in Volpertshausen features a traditional Handkäse workshop. This offers a concrete glimpse into local history alongside the furnished living quarters at Gottfried’s House. Anyone interested in everyday life and craft history will find two different perspectives here: life in a farmhouse and a presentation of a former craft workshop.
The Volpertshausen Atelier Church also offers a different cultural focus. During its studio season from April to October, the programme includes workshop weeks for freelance artists, exhibitions, concerts, readings, art workshops and open-air cinema. Individual events may vary from year to year, so it is worth checking the dates for the relevant season when making specific plans.
A nature experience on the Donkey Trail
The Donkey Trail in Vollnkirchen is a nature trail with play and experimentation stations. Its character differs from the historic interiors and cultural programme: here, the focus is on stations for playing and experimenting. This offers a clear thematic contrast when choosing among Hüttenberg’s experiences: history and exhibitions on the one hand, and a trail with interactive stations on the other.
More things to explore in the Lahn-Dill district
The wider travel destination of the Lahn-Dill district offers other distinct themes. In Wetzlar, the Lotte House commemorates Goethe’s encounter with Charlotte Buff and the summer of 1772. Two rooms on the first floor house a permanent exhibition on the origins and impact of Goethe’s first novel, “The Sorrows of Young Werther”. Also in Wetzlar, the Optics Trail invites visitors to discover and try out optical phenomena; it includes a walk-through kaleidoscope.
Industrial and technological history takes centre stage at other locations in the Lahn-Dill district. The Fortuna Mine in Solms-Oberbiel is the only Hessian anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage. In Dillenburg, Villa Grün displays objects and faithfully recreated scenes of industrial and craft production in the Dill region across more than 20 rooms; the basement also houses an elaborate, media-rich mining exhibition. These examples complement Hüttenberg’s themes with literature, optics and industrial heritage, without replacing the focus on local experiences.
