Solms lies west of Wetzlar in the Lahn-Dill district of central Hesse. Historic machinery, mining, museums and trails through the valley and forest give the town many different facets. You can watch production processes, delve into the region’s history or combine your stay with hiking, cycling and water-based activities.

Machinery, local history and an old shop

Historic machines are operated at the Industrial Museum, including machines that produce nails in various sizes. Visitors can observe the production process: rather than simply seeing finished items, you can watch them being made.

The Solms Industrial and Local History Museum is dedicated to the history of the present-day town. Archaeological finds, pictures, maps and documents offer different ways to explore its past. The section on local history is housed in the former administrative building of the Heinrich Hollmann & Co. agricultural machinery factory. This connects the exhibition with a building from the history of local agricultural engineering.

The museum also includes Mathilde’s Little Shop, a reconstructed historic general store from Burgsolms. It offers a visual glimpse into a shopping world from before the age of supermarkets. Solms’ Geopunkt offers another perspective on materials: the natural stone exhibition explains how regional rocks and raw materials are extracted, processed and used. Together, these places show not only machinery and products, but also how work, raw materials and everyday life are connected with Solms’ history.

Experience mining and compare trails

At Grube Fortuna, a one-hour underground tour takes visitors down to the 150-metre level in a vertical lift cage. The tour also includes a ride on the mine railway and demonstrations of original machinery. The combination of the descent, train ride and machinery reveals different aspects of mining. As tour availability may vary, check what is available before your visit.

The BergbauTrail at Grube Fortuna offers a different way to explore the area: the marked trail passes through the former open-pit mining area and Bergmannswald. If you prefer hiking, several routes also converge in Solms: the Lahnwanderweg, Bergmannsroute and Elisabethpfad. You can also hike through the Lahn Valley or the adjacent Hochtaunus Nature Park. The Walter-Veit-Weg leads through Mainbach Forest.

Cycling is another way to get your bearings. Along its route through Solms, the 245-kilometre Lahn Valley Cycle Path passes below Altenberg Abbey and by the Solmser Land swimming pool before reaching the Industrial and Local History Museum. Altenberg Abbey itself is a monastic complex more than 800 years old, built around 1170 and associated with Gertrude of Thuringia. Solms thus brings together a range of themes: mining trails, forest routes, a major cycling route and historic architecture.

Observatory and experiences on the Lahn

Burgsolms Observatory holds public observation evenings regularly once a month, except during the summer break. No advance booking is required for these evenings. Guided visits are available by prior appointment. Check the specific dates before travelling if you are planning to attend an observation evening or take a guided tour.

Solms-Schohleck is a launch point for water trips on the Lahn. Three companies in Schohleck also rent kayaks, canoes and inflatable boats. The launch point for a water trip and the boat rental companies are two separate reference points to help with your planning. Check in advance which boats are available and which options you would like to use.

Solms in the Lahn-Dill district

The region’s mining heritage is also visible across the wider Lahn-Dill district: the Grube Fortuna visitor mine in Solms-Oberbiel is the only European Route of Industrial Heritage anchor point in Hesse. This regional context complements the specific underground tour with a broader perspective on the significance of mining.

When looking for accommodation, you can first consider which experiences you want to shape your stay: local history and mining, hiking and cycling trails, an observation evening or activities on the Lahn. This lets you base your choice on the interests that matter most to you.
