Wicker between vineyards and history
Accommodation in Wicker
Winegrowing, historic streetscapes and trails through vineyards shape Wicker. You can get to know the town from different perspectives: at a seasonal wine tasting, on a short circular trail or along routes that showcase the vineyards and landscape.
Wine and local life
Wicker is known for its wine in the Rheingau wine-growing region. The wine-tasting stand offers seasonal tastings of wines from Wicker and Flörsheim; numerous traditional wine taverns round out the selection with wine and hearty dishes. The vineyard areas of Wicker and Flörsheim together cover around 83 hectares. Riesling and Pinot Noir are the main varieties grown there.
The Wicker Wine Festival is a regular opportunity to experience wine and local history together. It has been held for over 50 years on the first weekend in August in the historic town center around the “Gateway to the Rheingau.” If you would like to plan your visit around it, check the specific event dates in advance.
Trails through vineyards and countryside
The circular hiking trail, around 4 kilometers long, starts and ends at St. Catherine’s Church. Along the way, it passes the Nonnberg vineyard and old millstones, crosses the Wickerbach stream and then winds through the Wicker vineyards. This compact circular route brings together several characteristic features of the landscape.
The Wicker Wine Trail follows a different route. It starts at the “Gateway to the Rheingau” on Taunusstraße and passes through the König-Wilhelmsberg and Nonnberg vineyards, via Otto-Schwabe-Ruhe, to the Flörsheimer Warte. In the wider area of Flörsheim am Main, the Upper Rheingau Wine Experience Trail also starts in Wicker, among other places. Its main route is around 18 kilometers long; 40 stops provide information about the region’s geology and climate, historical events, wine, and the winegrowers. Comparing the routes shows their different scales without specifying a walking time.
The Vine Pergola Walk also starts on the outskirts of Wicker and leads through the vineyards toward the Flörsheimer Warte. It is part of the Regional Park circular route and is best reached on foot or by bicycle. There is a rest area along this trail in the “Herrnberg” vineyard, featuring a Roman wine relief. The route therefore combines exploring the landscape with a specific stop of historical and cultural interest.
Traces of history and outdoor art
The historic center conservation area preserves Wicker’s historic street layout and distinctive farmsteads; it extends as far as the Catholic parish church of St. Catherine. The Flörsheimer Warte also offers a glimpse into history: it stands on Geißberg above the Wicker vineyards and was originally part of the Kastel Landwehr in the 15th century. Today, it has a wine garden and offers panoramic views over the Main valley, the Frankfurt skyline, the Taunus and the rolling hills of Rheinhessen.
In the Wickerbach floodplain, the mill-wheel sculpture recalls the around 20 mills that operated along the Wickerbach from the 14th century onward. The floodplain itself is a cultural landscape of traditional orchards, vineyards and natural streamside areas. Together, these places show how winegrowing, waterways and older land uses remain visible side by side in the landscape.
Those wishing to include outdoor art in their visit can find the sculpture trail along Panoramaweg, between the Flörsheim districts of Wicker and Weilbach. Five monumental stone sculptures stand along a stretch of around 800 meters. The Vine Pergola Walk, with its Roman wine relief, offers a different historical and cultural perspective, while the sculpture trail features large-scale stone works.
