Neustadt (Hessen) combines local history with a selection of hiking and cycling routes. At the Junker-Hansen Tower, sightseeing, an exhibition and themed guided tours come together; beyond the tower, trails lead through a protected area, into the Otterbach Valley and to Neustadt’s districts. This lets you plan your stay around culture, outdoor activities, or a mix of both.

Junker-Hansen Tower and Local History

The Junker-Hansen Tower is open for visits from March to November on the first Sunday of each month, from 3 to 5 p.m. It is also open by appointment; admission is free. You can arrange themed guided tours with the municipal administration of Neustadt (Hessen). Opening hours and admission arrangements may change, so check the latest visitor information before you travel.

The permanent exhibition in the tower explores the historic town in the Marburg region and Neustadt’s history from the Stone Age to the present day. It also covers the districts of Mengsberg, Momberg and Speckswinkel. Another historical point of interest is the so-called “Burgsitze” (castle residences): two still remain in Neustadt today.

Guided City Tour, Hiking Trails and Cycling Route

The Neustadt guided tour lasts around two hours and starts at the market square in front of the old town hall. The tour includes visits to the inside and outside of the Catholic Church and the Junker-Hansen Tower; the guides share relevant information along the way. Check with the guide for current dates.

The 11-kilometre Gaukler Loop leads from the Junker-Hansen Tower through the Maculinea FFH protected area to Gleimenhain and back to Bürgerpark in Neustadt via the Otterbach Valley. Check for the latest trail updates before setting out. The “Fairytale Herrenwald” hiking trail follows a different route: it runs from Neustadt to the centre of Herrenwald and back; its trail symbol is a bear’s paw.

If you prefer cycling, consider the Junker-Hansen Cycle Tour. This circular route is around 18 kilometres long, starts and ends at Neustadt station, and passes through Neustadt’s districts. Trail conditions may change, so check for the latest updates before setting off.

Nature Trail in Mengsberg

The nature trail “Around the Engelhain” is located in Mengsberg, one of Neustadt’s districts. This circular route is around three kilometres long and lies north of the village. It is suitable for younger nature lovers and older walkers. The starting and finishing point is the recreation and sports grounds at Engelshain; the route description notes that there is plenty of parking there.

The trail leads from the hornbeam coppice, home to a stag beetle population, past the children’s forest and the “Tree of the Year” enclosure to the forest nature trail and the orchard meadow. Passing the alder carr and Lindenplatz, it returns to the recreation and sports grounds. The sequence of named stops gives this circular route its own distinct focus among the hiking options in Neustadt.

For unpleasant weather, the Rotkäppchen-Bad is recommended as an alternative to outdoor activities. Check in advance whether a visit is currently possible. If you’re looking for accommodation in Neustadt, your plans can help narrow down your options: would you mainly like to visit the tower and take a guided city tour, or also set aside time for hiking and cycling routes?
