Römershausen: Village History, Church and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Römershausen
Römershausen combines a distinctive village layout with a long history; the G12 circular trail passes through the village.
A village on a ridge
Römershausen is a compact village with an irregular layout. It lies at the mouth of a valley on a ridge that slopes down to the south. The village is also part of the Lahn-Dill-Bergland Nature Park. This landscape gives the village a distinctive character of its own, without requiring a wider surrounding area to be taken into account.
Roads connect Römershausen with Weidenhausen and Bad Endbach, as well as with Rachelshausen and Runzhausen. These villages provide practical points of reference when planning your journey.
History in the village and church
Römershausen was first mentioned in a document in 1255, under the name “Rembreteshusin.” It is the second-oldest district of Gladenbach. Another historical feature is the present-day Protestant church, whose construction dates back to the mid-19th century.
The church also houses an old bell dating to the 13th century. Its date therefore reaches back several centuries further than the construction of the present-day church. Anyone interested in a place’s history will find two distinct points of reference in time here, at one specific location.
Planning a hike around Römershausen
The G12 circular trail passes through Römershausen. It is listed as 13 kilometers long, with a duration of four hours. The distance and estimated time help you plan the trail as part of a day of hiking and compare it with your own schedule.
Children’s play areas add to the amenities mentioned in the village. If you are planning a trip with children, you can consider your preferred type of accommodation and the local play facilities as separate factors in your choice.
Gladenbach: Museum and traditions
In the wider destination of Gladenbach, the Amt Blankenstein Local History Museum offers various ways to explore regional history. The collection includes minerals; the museum also displays a working loom and exhibits on linen processing. These are joined by archaeological finds from prehistory and early history, including excavation finds from the castle. Natural history, craftsmanship and early history can thus be explored side by side, without reducing the different topics to a single focus.
The annual Cherry Market in Gladenbach also brings together several traditions. The market includes an additional Cherry Market Sunday, which has been held there since 1837. The Friday market features a general goods market with more than 100 stalls, as well as a food alley with culinary specialties; the specific format may vary from one edition to another. A Cherry Queen is also elected and crowned at the annual Cherry Market. She then represents the town at various events for a year.
More trails in the wider destination
The approximately nine-kilometer Georg-Ludwig-Hartig Trail runs from Georg-Ludwig-Hartig Park via Hinterländer Schweiz and the Schieferkauten towards Sinkershausen, then over Kirchberg to Gladenbach. The Gladenbacher Berglandring can be reached via the Gladenbach Busbahnhof public transport stop; from there, it is about a ten-minute walk to the starting point. Check public transport services for your travel date before setting off. Gladenbach is also recommended as a starting point for the bicycle route from Marburg to Gießen.
