Schrecksbach draws attention to Schwalm traditional dress and the life reflected in clothing, crafts and living spaces. In the district of Holzburg, the Schwalm Village Museum in Holzburg shows how these themes come together: traditional dress takes center stage, is preserved and exhibited, and is also presented on certain occasions.

Visits with a guided tour are possible by arrangement; visiting is limited during the winter months. Check current visiting options directly with the museum before planning your stay.

Schwalm traditional dress in many forms

Forty dolls illustrate early forms of Schwalm traditional dress from the first third of the 19th century. Gerhardt von Reutern and Ludwig Emil Grimm also depicted these forms in their works. Alongside them, life-size figures dressed in complete outfits show the diversity of the traditional dress, for example at a wedding or on a visit to church. The exhibition thus presents different forms of representation alongside specific examples.

The collections also include individual items of traditional dress: bonnets, apron corners and knitted goods, including stockings and gloves. Examples of Schwalm whitework embroidery add to the insight into textile handicrafts. This lets you encounter the subject both as a complete outfit and through individual items and patterns.

Living spaces, kitchen and work

On the ground floor, a Schwalm kitchen has been set up with a masonry hearth and smoke hood. Upstairs, you can see a living room, the “Gürre Stubb,” as well as a bedroom and a retirement room, or Altenteil. These named rooms make the domestic side of the exhibition just as tangible as the collection of traditional dress.

Other displays focus on processing flax into woven linen and on work in the fields. Schwalm ceramics and furniture offer insights into everyday life. Together, these subjects lead from clothing and textile work to domestic life and agricultural activity, without relying on a single object to tell the whole story.
