Steinau reveals itself through its landscape and its enduring traces of culture: drainage ditches along the roadside shape the village and its surroundings. In the southern part, the Hadelner Canal, its dikes and towpaths define the character of the area; moorland and woodland lie to the south and southwest. You can therefore plan your trip around the themes that interest you most: water and nature, church art or a cultural event.

Canals, Ditches and Meadow Birds

The Steinau–Alte Aue project area lies southwest of Steinau, between Lauentheil and Süderwesterseite. It is a breeding area for meadow birds of national and local importance. The Sietland is also a traditional breeding area for meadow birds, including lapwings, redshanks, curlews and snipes. Between 2018 and 2020, species-rich marsh grassland and traditional ditch structures were restored near Steinau–Norderende. These nature themes offer different perspectives: the breeding areas highlight the landscape’s importance as a habitat, while the restored fields and ditches represent a distinct aspect of landscape conservation.

Along the Hadelner Canal, the adjoining dikes and towpaths are part of the landscape. Together with the drainage ditches, they show how strongly waterways and ditch structures shape Steinau. Moorland and woodland south and southwest of the village add to this landscape. If you enjoy exploring different aspects of nature, you can take these contrasts into account when planning your days without reducing the landscape to a single attraction.

Church History Across Several Periods

St. John the Baptist Church brings together several periods. The church in Steinau was first recorded as a Sendkirche in 1245 and is considered one of the older churches in the Sietland. The half-timbered building was erected in 1835. Inside is a wooden baptismal font with a pewter bowl dated 1733. The organ was built by Georg Wilhelm in 1839 and restored by Hillebrand in 1991; it is considered a late example of North German organ building.

The dates mark different chapters: 1245 is the early record of the church, 1733 the pewter bowl, 1835 the half-timbered building, and 1839 and 1991 the construction and restoration of the organ. Church and architectural history in Steinau therefore cannot be reduced to a single date. Anyone interested in architecture or historic furnishings will find several specific points of interest here.

Cultural Events and the Brewery

The Kleine Kulturkreis Steinau organizes cabaret, theatre and readings. Small art exhibitions are occasionally held in the Holzschuhmacherhaus. The annual Steinauer FrĂĽhtanz at Pentecost is also part of the recurring events calendar. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the latest dates in advance.

The brewery adds another facet to the village: its brewing equipment is set up for brewing, fermenting, bottling and cooling beer. The local beer is produced under the name Alte Aue, including Pilsner and wheat beer. A snack vending machine in the front area is accessible to everyone, including cyclists passing by. The brewery also has a barrier-free access path.

Choose a Focus for Your Accommodation Search

When choosing accommodation, you can first decide which aspect of Steinau interests you most: the landscape with its ditches, canals and meadow birds; the history of the church and its furnishings; or cultural life, with events and exhibitions. If you are travelling with people who have different interests, this choice can help you sort out everyone’s preferences. Nature experiences, church art and an event on the calendar are different reasons to include Steinau in your travel plans. Tailor your accommodation search to the focus that will be the deciding factor for your stay.
