Four green-covered beaches give the Wurster North Sea Coast its distinctive coastal character. They are joined by churches with special historical connections, the Midlum Mill and a collection that presents shells and snail shells in an unusual way. Landscape, regional history and natural forms thus sit side by side, with different highlights for you to choose from during your stay.

Churches, a Mill and Regional History

The origins of St. George’s Church in Spieka date back to 1319. In Cappel, St. Peter and Paul’s Church is known for its 17th-century organ by Arp Schnitger. The two churches offer different historical highlights: Spieka’s church history reaches far back, while Cappel’s 17th-century Schnitger organ takes centre stage.

For a different perspective on craftsmanship and technology, head to Midlum. The Midlum Mill is a gallery Dutch windmill. The Meinecke miller family built it in 1857, with two grain mills and a roller mill. It is one of the few windmills of this type in the Cuxhaven district that are still operational. Baking days and events are regularly held at the mill. Check the mill’s website for current dates.

An Unusual Museum in Wremen

The Curious Shell Museum in Wremen showcases the diversity of nature through more than 3,000 shells and snail shells from around the world. The exhibits are not arranged according to scientific categories; instead, they are given names inspired by playful wordcraft and the variety of their forms. This draws attention not only to the extensive collection, but also to the connection between natural forms and playful naming.

In the Wider Cuxhaven Destination

Cuxhaven also offers a setting of its own for exploring nature and culture. The UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea Visitor Centre Cuxhaven presents information about the Wadden Sea and the Cuxhaven coastal heaths across three exhibition floors. The centre’s nature tours let you experience mudflats, salt marshes, geest cliffs and coastal heathland.

Cuxwatt offers guided mudflat walks from Cuxhaven-Duhnen all year round for participants of all ages. Depending on the tour, they last from 1.5 to 4 hours. Tides, weather and the provider’s schedule can affect the dates, so check the details for your preferred date.

You can explore Ahlenmoor on your own on foot, by bicycle or on the moor railway; guided tours are also available. In the wider Cuxhaven destination, the five-kilometre Spieka-Neufeld circular trail runs through the salt marshes north of the fishing harbour.

The historic Hapag Halls are a departure facility for emigrants and now serve as an event venue; guided tours and visits are possible. The 29-metre-high wooden Kugelbake marks where the Elbe ends and the North Sea begins. The two-storey Alte Liebe viewing platform offers views of the Elbe.

Which themes will shape your trip?

When looking for accommodation on the Wurster North Sea Coast, choosing a clear focus is a good place to start. Ask yourself whether coastal landscapes and local history should shape your stay, or whether you would also like to consider the nature and culture themes of the wider Cuxhaven destination.
