Räbke is best discovered through two of its defining features: the striking St. Stephani Church and the history of the Schunter and its mills. The church’s architecture stands out clearly from that of other churches in the region; at the same time, the Schunter flows here in two branches. Together, the architecture, watercourse and mill history give the village its own distinctive character. If you are looking for accommodation for your stay, consider Räbke as a destination for historical discoveries and cycling.

St. Stephani: distinctive architecture and history

St. Stephani Church offers a striking window onto the village’s history. Its architecture distinguishes it clearly from other churches in the region. The village’s ecclesiastical significance also reaches far back: St. Stephani was once an archdeaconry from which the Bishop of Halberstadt advanced the Christianisation of the area.

A baptistery is mentioned as having stood on the site of St. Stephani as early as the 8th century. This early reference and the church’s later role highlight different aspects of its history. Visitors interested in buildings and church history can therefore explore both the distinctive architecture and the long history of the site—without equating the mention of the baptistery with the present-day church.

The Schunter and its mill history

In Räbke, the Schunter flows in two branches: its main channel and a millrace built by monks in the Middle Ages. The river and the artificially created channel tell the story of the connection between water and mills that shaped Räbke’s history. In the past, seven mills in the village produced flour, oil and paper.

Those interested in the technology behind this history can visit the mill machinery at the Liesebach watermill on request. The visit is available by prior arrangement. This offers a hands-on insight into the technology behind the mills’ former importance, while the Schunter’s two branches provide the scenic setting.

Cycling and swimming

The approximately 70-kilometre Schunter Cycle Route opened in 2019. It follows the river upstream from where the Schunter flows into the Oker near Groß Schwülper to its source in the Elm near Räbke. Räbke is therefore part of a cycling route that runs between the river’s mouth and its source. The stated length gives you a concrete point of reference when considering cycling as a focus of your stay.

Another leisure option lies between Räbke and the Schunter springs: there, an outdoor swimming pool invites you to take a swim. The cycle route and the pool offer different ways to spend your time—a longer journey along the Schunter on the one hand, and swimming on the other. You can therefore choose between a bike ride and a day at the pool when planning your stay, without confusing the two activities.

Cultural attractions in the wider destination of Helmstedt

Beyond Räbke, the wider destination of Helmstedt offers its own cultural attractions. In Königslutter, the Imperial Cathedral is one of Lower Saxony’s most impressive Romanesque buildings. Together with the cloister and the Imperial Lothair Lime Tree in the former monastery courtyard, it forms a much-visited attraction. These buildings are part of the cultural offerings in the Helmstedt destination, not attractions in Räbke.

In Helmstedt itself, another architectural highlight is the Juleum Novum: the assembly building of the former university was constructed between 1592 and 1597 as a palatial Renaissance building. The wider destination therefore brings together a range of historical highlights, while Räbke’s local history is shaped especially by St. Stephani, the Schunter and the former mills.

When looking for accommodation, the first thing to consider is therefore what you would like to focus on: Räbke has its own distinctive character, with St. Stephani, the Schunter and its mill history; other cultural attractions belong to the wider destination of Helmstedt. Choose where to stay based on which of these themes you would like to shape your visit.
