Süpplingenburg offers several points of interest for a stay: the architectural history of St. John's, the Schunter River and the wider Elm-Lappwald natural area. You can focus on culture and landscape, or combine the two according to your interests.

Romanesque architecture at St. John's

St. John's Church is a three-aisled sandstone pillar basilica with a transept. The surviving remains of the crypt date from the late 12th century. Emperor Lothar initially had the church built as a flat-roofed basilica between 1130 and 1135; it underwent extensive renovation from 1966 to 1975. The terms describe different aspects of the building: “three-aisled” refers to the layout of the church interior, while the transept crosses the longitudinal structure. The surviving remains of the crypt add another layer to the building's history. Since 1993, St. John's has been part of the “Ways to Romanesque” tourism program. Check the program's current presentation before your trip.

Historic routes and the Schunter River

Süpplingenburg Castle was built at a crossroads of historic routes in the Schunter lowlands. This historical connection draws attention to the routes that once ran through the landscape. The Schunter flows through Süpplingenburg and shapes an attractive floodplain landscape—a distinctive natural feature alongside the architectural history. There is a rhododendron planting around Sandteich. It blooms in May and June, though the timing may vary. If the bloom is important to your travel plans, keep this seasonal timeframe in mind.

Hiking and landscapes in Elm-Lappwald

The Elm offers extensive walks and hikes throughout the year; guided hikes may be available during the holiday months. The Elm-Lappwald Nature Park covers an area of about 470 square kilometres and includes forests, springs, ponds, heathland and salt meadows. Its protected areas provide habitats for numerous endangered species. These varied landscape features offer nature lovers several themes to explore outdoors.
