Winzenburg draws attention to historic fortifications and water: at the castle complex, surviving ditches and ramparts reveal their impressive scale, and archaeological finds confirm that the Apenteich spring is a spring sanctuary. There is also a cycle tour that passes through Winzenburg. This gives you a choice of different focal points when planning your trip: visible fortification remains, springs and a cycle route with a stated distance and duration.

Fortification remains and history

At the Winzenburg castle complex, ditches and ramparts have been preserved, revealing their impressive scale. The historic classification of the Hohe Schanze dates back to the 9th century: it continued to be used, or was used again, at that time. The hill was occupied by an extensive fortification with three ramparts, several ditches and earthen ramparts along the edge of the steep slopes. A gate leading to the outer bailey is still clearly visible today. This brings different aspects of fortified sites into focus: the surviving ditches and ramparts at Winzenburg, and at the Hohe Schanze, the layout of ramparts and ditches and the clearly visible gate.

Springs, ponds and water outflows

Archaeological finds provide clear evidence that the Apenteich spring is a spring sanctuary. You can reach the spring and the Apenteich ponds from the “Apenteich” hiking car park on the edge of the Winzenburg forest via a hiking trail approximately 150 metres long. The length of the access path is therefore also given to help you find your way. Check access information before your visit, as it may change seasonally.

The springs below Tiebenburg offer a different scene: they rise in a hollow on the steep slope. On the eastern side, a stone surround channels the outflow; elsewhere, water bubbles, wells up and seeps through. While the Apenteich spring stands out for its archaeologically identified spring sanctuary and the named ponds, the emphasis here is on the different forms of water outflow.

Cycling: two different route scales

The “Fishing & Agriculture” cycle tour passes through Winzenburg, is 27 kilometres long and takes 2 to 3 hours. Its length and stated duration give you concrete information for planning your day. Check the route details before setting off.

The Leine-Heide Cycle Route, in the wider travel destination of Freden (Leine), is on a different scale. The approximately 410-kilometre route passes through Freden (Leine), the Leinebergland, the Hannover region and the Lüneburg Heath before reaching Hamburg; its source is near Leinefelde in Thuringia. This lets you compare two different scales of planning: a tour that passes through Winzenburg and has a stated duration, and the approximate total length of a regional cycle route.

Freden (Leine): history and architectural heritage

Freden (Leine) was first mentioned in a document as a church site in 1068. At St. Georg, the oldest parts of the solid church tower, built of rubble stone, date from the church’s Romanesque period. St. Georg also houses a Baroque baptismal angel from the second half of the 18th century, particularly characteristic of the Hildesheimer Land-Alfeld church district. These dates and architectural features give Freden (Leine) its own historical focus.

The Fredener tithe barn also offers a distinctive architectural landmark: it is characterised by rubble-stone masonry and timber-beam structures, and serves as a venue for cultural activities. It has seating for approximately 350 people. Together, the church and the tithe barn showcase different facets of Freden (Leine)’s architectural heritage—from the Romanesque tower and Baroque artwork to a venue with historically influenced construction.
