Discover Salzgitter: Water Sports, Culture and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Salzgitter
Salzgitter offers a range of reasons to visit: water sports at Lake Salzgitter, history at Salder Castle, hikes in the surrounding hills and insights into steel production.
Water Sports and Swimming at Lake Salzgitter
Lake Salzgitter is the water sports hub of southeastern Lower Saxony. Its beach is 1,600 metres long, and the water quality is suitable for swimming. Check local bathing conditions before your visit.
A water-ski cableway with a circular course of around 800 metres is located on the west shore. It caters to beginners, enthusiastic recreational skiers and professionals. This means the lake offers a range of water activities, from swimming and spending time at the beach to water skiing. Please check whether the water-ski cableway is operating before your visit.
Salder Castle: Renaissance and Ice Age Garden
Salder Castle was built in 1608 in the Renaissance style. The Salder Castle Municipal Museum explores the history of the Salzgitter region, from its geological past to the end of the 20th century. Its scope therefore extends well beyond a single historical period.
The museum includes a 2,000-square-metre Ice Age Garden, which illustrates the living conditions of Neanderthals during the last Ice Age. In the wider Salzgitter area, Salder Castle also offers an Ice Age Garden and a mill garden with a windmill that is more than 440 years old. Its cultural programme includes exhibitions, lectures, concerts and the Kultursommer festival, featuring many bands.
Lichtenberg Castle Ruins and Hiking Trails
Lichtenberg Castle Ruins have been considered one of the most significant sites of their kind since the time of Henry the Lion. The rebuilt keep houses a permanent exhibition on the castle's history and archaeological finds. The site thus brings together the castle's history and insights into finds associated with it.
If you would like to combine your stay with outdoor activity, the Salzgitter Hills have a 150-kilometre network of hiking trails. These hikes offer a different focus from the beach and water sports or the exhibitions at Salder Castle: the emphasis here is on exploring an extensive network of trails. The Salzgitter-Bad Geotrail offers one hiking route in Salzgitter: it runs for around 6.5 kilometres through the hills, starting and ending at the Bismarck Tower.
Insights into Steel Production
Guided tours of the Salzgitter AG steelworks explain steel production, from the blast furnace where pig iron is produced to the rolling mills where semi-finished and finished products are made. Individuals and small groups of up to 15 people can visit the steelworks through the Salzgitter Tourist Information Office. Check available dates and booking conditions before your trip.
If you would like to combine several interests, it helps to weigh these different options against one another when planning your trip.
