Discover Heiningen: Monastery history and the Monopteros
Accommodation in Heiningen
St. Peter and Paul and the Monopteros give Heiningen two concrete points of interest: monastery history and a walk to a historic building at the edge of the forest. For your planning, sacred architecture and the route to the Monopteros can be considered as separate highlights. The craft of processing milk also offers a distinct culinary focus.
Monastery history and religious art
Heiningen Monastery was founded around 1000 by Hildeswid and Alburgis of the Saxon Billung dynasty. St. Peter and Paul is a former monastery church and Catholic parish church in Heiningen. Painted sculptures of the monastery’s founders, Hildeswid and Alburg, dating from the 13th century, have been preserved in the monastery church. This brings together the monastery’s founding story and later depictions of the same people; the history of the monastery becomes tangible through specific names and works of art.
St. Peter and Paul is a barrel-vaulted basilica. Its furnishings include an early 17th-century pulpit with the four Evangelists and an octagonal baptismal font made of dark marble from the first half of the 18th century. Two saints from the early 13th century have been preserved beneath arcades. Several periods thus come together in the church: its architectural form, figures and liturgical objects reveal different facets of sacred architecture and art. The artworks mentioned span the period from the early 13th century to the first half of the 18th century.
The Monopteros at the edge of the forest
The historic Monopteros is located at the edge of the forest, about one kilometre from Heiningen, and is freely accessible. A wide forest path leads there in about 15 minutes from car parks on Hauptstraße or by the war memorial. The approximate walking time helps you work the visit into your day’s plans. Check current route and access conditions in advance.
Milk processing and farm shop
The farm dairy processes milk from the farm’s cows and goats. It makes yoghurt, fruit yoghurt, quark, fresh cheese, soft cheese, mozzarella, semi-hard cheese and hard cheese by hand. KlosterGuter cheese is made from raw milk from the farm’s own cows, using traditional recipes. The cheeses mature on untreated spruce boards and are brushed and turned by hand every day.
The Klostergut farm shop sells cheese made on site, as well as meat and sausages from the farm’s own cattle and goats. Production methods, recipes and the range of products may change; if a particular product is important to you, check in advance.
Planning your trip: highlights
When choosing accommodation, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on: should your stay centre on monastery history and religious art, a walk to the Monopteros, or an interest in artisan milk processing? Base your search on that focus and check whether the location of specific accommodation suits your plans.
