Gorlosen: Elde, Village Church and Nature
Accommodation in Gorlosen
Between the village church, the Elde and its natural landscapes, Gorlosen reveals different facets of its local and natural history. The area also has connections to paddling, cycling and horseback riding, which can add a different focus to your trip. When looking for accommodation, it’s worth first considering which of these interests will shape your stay.
Water and landscapes around Gorlosen
The area around Gorlosen is highly biodiverse and shaped by natural streams and rivers, including the renaturalised Alte Elde. Wetlands, as well as drinking water and nature conservation areas, are also part of this landscape. Gorlosen lies on the Elde; the Elde–Müritz Waterway and the Alte Elde are used by canoeists and kayakers. If you’re planning a paddling trip, check access and water levels in advance.
Since 2019, the municipality has been officially protected as a “Quiet Area” because of its low noise levels. If the current protection status is important to your plans, check it in advance.
The village church and its features
Gorlosen Village Church is a rectangular fieldstone building with a polygonal chancel and a west tower. The polygonal chancel is the many-sided end of the chancel. Its features include a richly decorated wooden ceiling, painted in the Baroque style in 1679, with medallions depicting Jesus Christ and the Apostles. The church also houses an intricately crafted wrought-iron baptismal stand from 1801. There is also a pulpit altar, which is rather unusual for the region; the organ was built in 1873.
Gorlosen is also a stop on the “Spiritual Summer in the North,” with a medieval church, a community hall and a festival meadow. The programme at individual stops may vary. If you have a specific event in mind, check the latest dates in advance.
Cycling and horseback riding
Gorlosen lies on the Redefin–Neustadt/Dosse stud farm trail, a long-distance riding route. Check the route conditions before riding. For cyclists, Gorlosen is in the hinterland of the “Elberadwanderweg” long-distance cycle route; check the route infrastructure before your trip, too. The connections differ: the stud farm trail runs through the village, while the cycle route is associated with the area through its hinterland.
Gorlosen can be reached via the L07 state road and the K50 district road. This lets you tailor your choice to your travel group’s interests without assuming that everyone wants to do the same activity.
Culture in the wider destination of Ludwigslust-Parchim
In the wider destination of Ludwigslust-Parchim, Ludwigslust Palace adds its own distinct cultural and historical dimension. It was the former residence of the Dukes of Mecklenburg and forms an ensemble with its park and town, described as the “Little Versailles of the North.” The palace stands at the centre of an almost completely preserved late Baroque town plan, with a former court church and an English-style landscaped park.
