Setzin brings together several different reasons to visit: the 32 km Hagenow Countryside Tour passes through the village, and there are also two named oak trees and the history of the manor house. Cycling, nature and architectural history each add their own appeal. If you are looking for accommodation in Setzin, these themes can help you decide what you would like to focus on during your stay.

The Hagenow Countryside Tour: a route that passes through Setzin

The Hagenow Countryside Tour is a 32 km cycling route. It runs from Hagenow via Toddin and Setzin to Schwechow, Pritzier, Warlitz and Steegen, then back to Hagenow. Setzin is therefore part of a longer route, with Hagenow at the beginning and end of the described circuit.

The distance gives you a concrete basis for planning. How much time you allow will also depend on your pace and breaks. The individual stops along the route offer audio texts and images. So, alongside the physical activity, audio and visual content are also part of the tour concept—an added attraction for anyone interested in learning more along the way.

Oaks and the manor house: nature and architectural history

The mighty oak near Setzin has a trunk circumference of more than six metres. Tree measurements may change slightly over time. The Court Oak near Setzin stands in the forest, 2 km southwest of the village. These two natural landmarks each have their own distinctive feature: the mighty oak stands out for its size, while the Court Oak is notable for its precise location in the forest.

The history of the Setzin manor house also has a clear chronology: it was built around 1860 in the Neo-Gothic style on the foundations of an earlier Baroque building dating from 1701. The two dates link an early construction phase with the later building of the manor house, giving its architectural history a specific timeframe.

Sacred buildings as another tour theme

Setzin is listed as a village on a themed cycling tour that connects sacred buildings in the town of Hagenow and the Hagenow-Land administrative district. The buildings mentioned include churches in Pritzier, Warlitz, Redefin, Picher, Moraas and Kirch Jesar, as well as the synagogue and churches in Hagenow. This adds another cultural perspective to the Hagenow Countryside Tour: this route focuses on the religious architectural history of several villages in the region.

Toddin: a distinct historical context

Toddin also has its own historical context. The religious site there had a history spanning more than 500 years; this initially came to an end with the act of deconsecration. The half-timbered chapel of the von Pentz family was built in 1520 on the orders of Joachim von Pentz and demolished in 1956, presumably because it had fallen into disrepair. These two details tell of different periods in Toddin’s history, although the chapel no longer exists today.

Hans von Pentz became Toddin’s feudal lord in 1432; his family remained connected with the estate until 1670. Another historical reference concerns the Oll Burg southwest of Toddin: in 1128, a complex of wood and earthen ramparts comprising a castle, a residential site and a farmyard was mentioned there. Together, these dates offer insight into different periods of Toddin’s history.

The Ludwigslust-Parchim district list of historic monuments, as of August 2023, includes several buildings in Toddin: the former smithy at DorfstraĂźe 28, the fieldstone barn at Hillerweg 8, the residential building at MĂĽhlenweg 6, and the residential buildings at MĂĽhlenweg 8/10. These entries add named buildings and specific addresses to the historical context.
