Discover Borkow: Manor House, Churches and Nature
Accommodation in Borkow
Borkow combines distinctive architectural history with outdoor activities: the manor house is located on the Mildenitz River, while rail-bike rides, cycling routes and spots by the water offer different ideas for a day out. This provides helpful guidance when choosing accommodation: would you like to focus on historic buildings, take a ride along the former railway line, or set aside time for a swimming spot, beach and sunbathing lawn? The sights and activities offer different highlights, so you can shape your stay around your interests.
Manor house and motte: traces of different eras
Borkow Manor House is a manor house dating from around 1700 to 1720. Its grounds cover approximately 20,000 m², and the building is located on the Mildenitz River. Borkow Manor Chapel stands in the eastern part of the estate and is one of the first Protestant churches in the state. Its full renovation was completed around 2010. The construction period of the manor house, church history and a later chapter in its preservation can thus be viewed as distinct parts of the village’s history.
Another marker in time is Borkow Motte, which was built in the mid-15th century. From the manor house grounds, the so-called “motte island” can be reached by a small bridge. The motte and the manor house therefore point to different periods. Together with the manor chapel, they offer a range of historical themes that can shape your stay.
Churches with distinctive architectural details
Borkow Village Church adds its own architectural note: it is a brick building, probably from the 16th century, with a polygonal chancel end of the same width as the nave. “Polygonal” describes a shape with several sides. The church’s features include the “Mecklenburg organ,” built and consecrated in 1997. Its mechanism plays the melody “Herrn Pastor sin Kauh” and includes a moving water wheel, a windmill with a cymbal, and moving cow heads. Here, the church’s architecture meets an organ with musical and moving elements.
Explore by rail bike, bicycle or on foot
The Mecklenburger Draisinenbahn offers rail-bike rides along the former Karow–Borkow railway line. The rail bikes seat two to four people and are suitable for family outings. Borkow Fun-Bikes are also considered suitable for families. For a break by the water, there is a swimming spot, a beach and a sunbathing lawn near the manor house. These options offer different ways to focus your stay on activity or relaxation.
Numerous cycling routes and circular trails around Borkow invite you to explore the forested, water-rich landscape. The municipality also has a 3.0 km forest nature trail that passes several information boards about nature, plants and the region’s history. Its entrance is near the village of Schlowe, east of the Karow–Borkow rail-bike route. The rail-bike ride follows the former railway line, while the nature trail combines the route with themes of nature and the region. You can therefore choose from different ways to experience the area.
