Discover Utzedel: Churches, Mills and a Slavic Hillfort
Accommodation in Utzedel
In Utzedel, village churches, mills and a Slavic hillfort tell different stories about the area. Granite blocks, fieldstone and half-timbering each make their own distinctive mark; waterways and the landscape of the Tollense lowlands add to the picture. Those interested in architectural history will find several specific features to explore, while nature and local history invite visitors to look beyond individual buildings.
Churches and mills with stories of their own
The village church in Utzedel is an Early Gothic building made of granite blocks, preserved largely unchanged. Two east windows by Rostock artist Lothar Mannewitz were dedicated on 31 October 1965: the left depicts a scene from the Nativity of Christ, and the right one a scene from the Resurrection of Christ. The windows offer a chance to shift your attention from the building itself to their design. Visits to the church can be arranged with the parish office; please coordinate your visit before arriving.
Roidin is home to a Neo-Gothic church and a historic watermill, each representing a different chapter in architectural history. The church is a fieldstone building with distinctive brick detailing. Its altar depicts the Adoration of the Christ Child in the manger; members of the von Maltzahn family appear in the background. Visits to the church can also be arranged with the parish office.
Roidin Watermill was built around 1805 as a farm mill. Its working and residential sections are half-timbered and rest on a fieldstone base; the interior was substantially altered later. Transmission shafts and wheels have survived in the cellar and milling floor, and a set of millstones lies in the garden. These technical details add clues about the mill’s former use to the view of its exterior.
Leistenow, too, brings architecture and history together: its chapel has a 17th-century altar. The watermill there has been preserved in its original form at a watermill site dating to 1698. It stands about 600 metres outside the village, along an old avenue with typical cobblestones in a natural setting. A Slavic hillfort is also located on Carolinenberg near Utzedel. Together, these sites offer different reasons to explore religious architecture, the history of milling and earlier settlement patterns.
Waterways and the regional landscape
The landscape has several distinct points of reference: the Augraben flows through the western part of the Utzedel municipal area; the Tollense lies north of the municipality, and Roidin is on the edge of the Tollense lowlands. These details help place local points of interest on the map without conflating the churches and mills with a single river landscape. When planning your trip, you can therefore treat cultural sites and the landscape as separate areas of interest.
The wider Mecklenburg Lake District destination also offers its own natural setting. Müritz National Park is part of this region, characterized by forests, bogs, lakes and open meadows. The Müritz National Park Hiking Trail runs through a range of landscapes over nine stages, passing lakes, ancient forests and inland dunes, and reaching the source of the Havel. Certified nature and landscape guides offer informative tours there, including visits to the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest at Serrahn and tours from the water.
Another nature attraction in the wider Mecklenburg Lake District destination is the Damerower Werder bison reserve. It is located on a peninsula in Lake Kölpinsee and in Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heath Nature Park; visitors can observe bison there. A forest discovery trail offers climbing opportunities, an anthill house, an exhibition with touch-and-see panels, and a dendrophone. These regional nature experiences offer a different focus from Utzedel’s churches, mills and landscape features.
