Moltzow – Village Churches, Animal Worlds and Historic Traces
Accommodation in Moltzow
Moltzow offers a wide variety of discoveries: the Deserted Church of Domherrenhagen, the last surviving structure of a medieval village; churches in Schwinkendorf and Rambow with clearly dated construction and furnishing phases; and Rambow Petting Farm, with its animals and botanical garden. This gives you a choice of distinct focuses, from architectural history and nature to a family day out with activities for children.
Village Churches and Traces of Past Centuries
The Deserted Church of Domherrenhagen is the last surviving structure of a village that existed there from the 13th to the 15th century. As early as 1271, the church in Domherrenhagen became the parish church for the residents of Rambow. Services and concerts are occasionally held in the ruins; check specific dates before your visit.
The village church in Schwinkendorf also tells its architectural story in clearly distinguishable phases. The listed church building dates from the mid-13th century; the rectangular brick west tower was added in 1495. A dry-stone fieldstone wall surrounds the cemetery. In Rambow, meanwhile, the village church is a Renaissance fieldstone building dating from the 15th century. Its furnishings add further historical details: the altar and pulpit date from 1610, while the organ in the west gallery was built in 1933 by the Danish organ builder Marcussen of Apenrade. Anyone interested in architectural and church history can compare a variety of dates and building styles without assuming that the churches represent the same period.
Animals and Plants in Rambow
Rambow Petting Farm is located in Rambow Hof in the Mecklenburg Switzerland region, on a terminal moraine. It is home to around 200 animals of 70 species and focuses on old domestic animal breeds that are at risk of extinction. Children can enjoy a trampoline, climbing facilities and swings. There is also a botanical garden with 700 different perennials and woody plants. The same destination therefore offers several attractions: its animals, plant diversity and play facilities for children. There is a car park in front of the petting farm.
More Cultural Traces and a Seasonal Event
In Moltzow, Wilhelm von Maltzan laid out the landscape park at the manor house. Remains of a motte can still be seen behind Moltzow’s sports ground. Another special feature can be found in the Pfundgrube Manor House in Rambow Hof: it houses the First German Metre Museum, as well as a collection of butter wrapping paper. These varied themes range from architectural and landscape history to an unusual collection of everyday objects.
In Marxhagen, a district of the municipality of Moltzow, there is a castle built in the Tudor style in the mid-19th century, continuing the tradition of English Tudor Gothic architecture in Mecklenburg. A harvest festival is traditionally held in the municipality of Moltzow in October. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the specific date in advance.
Holiday Apartments and a Wider Range of Excursions
Holiday apartments are available in the 18th-century Rambow rectory, next to the village church in Rambow. The building has a restored old rose garden and park. Check the availability of the holiday apartments before your trip.
If you are planning your stay with a broader look at the Mecklenburg Lake District, there are more nature attractions to explore. Müritz National Park is part of this region, with landscapes shaped by forests, bogs, lakes and expansive meadows. The Müritz National Park Hiking Trail covers a variety of landscapes over nine stages, passing lakes, ancient forests and inland dunes, and leading to the source of the Havel. Another nature attraction is the Damerower Werder bison reserve, located on a peninsula in Lake Kölpin, in the Mecklenburg Lake District and the Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heath Nature Park. Visitors can observe the animals there; the forest discovery trail features climbing facilities, an ant house, an exhibition with tactile and visual panels, and a dendrophone. When planning your trip, you can therefore take account of local cultural heritage and the distinct nature attractions of the Mecklenburg Lake District as separate interests.
