Groß Teetzleben lies in the glacial valley of the Tollense, a landscape shaped by numerous ponds and meadows. A natural stream runs between Groß Teetzleben and Klein Teetzleben. The village is also home to an unusually detailed architectural monument: the village church of Groß Teetzleben. The area can therefore be explored through two distinct themes—the landscape of the Tollense Valley and a church whose construction and furnishings span several centuries.

The Tollense Valley and activities

Ponds and meadows shape the landscape in the Tollense Valley around Groß Teetzleben. The natural stream between the two Teetzleben villages adds a striking feature to this scenery. When planning your trip, you can focus on the natural surroundings or the cultural monument: the landscape provides a setting for a stay amid greenery, while the village church offers a specific reason to explore the history and furnishings of the area.

For active days, a cycle path along the L 27 connects Groß Teetzleben with Altentreptow. In 2024, a renovation project concerned this cycle path. As its surface condition may change, check it before setting out. Another reason to visit is the riding stable in Groß Teetzleben, which offers riding lessons for children and adults as well as accommodation for trail riders. If you are planning a visit for a specific date, confirm lessons and accommodation in advance.

The village church: construction and furnishings

The village church of Groß Teetzleben is a half-timbered church built in 1721, with a three-sided eastern end. At the western end stands a timber-clad tower topped with a slender, octagonal spire. The carved altar with its Baroque retable dates from around 1500. Its shrine depicts a figurative Crucifixion scene, while the wings show scenes from the Passion. Further panel paintings were added to the altar ensemble in 1739: the Last Supper is in the predella and the Ascension in the upper section.

The rest of the furnishings also bring together pieces from different periods. The bell dates from 1569, while the wooden pulpit and baptismal font are from the second half of the 17th century. Another 17 panel paintings are located on the organ gallery and in the box pew. The church’s history therefore extends beyond its construction in 1721: the building, paintings and furnishings reflect several historical periods. The village church underwent extensive renovation from 2015 to 2018, with the tower excluded; the organ was restored in 2021.

More places to explore in the Mecklenburg Lake District

The Mecklenburg Lake District also offers distinct destinations with further nature and cultural experiences. The Müritz National Park Hiking Trail covers the landscape types and special features of Müritz National Park, which is part of the Mecklenburg Lake District, over nine stages. The route follows lakeshores, passes through ancient forests and by inland dunes, and continues to the source of the Havel. Certified nature and landscape guides offer informative tours, including guided visits to the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest in Serrahn and tours from the water. A nine-stage hiking trail and guided nature tours thus offer different ways to explore the area.

Another natural highlight is the Damerower Werder bison reserve, on a peninsula in Lake Kölpin, in the Mecklenburg Lake District and the Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heath Nature Park. Visitors can observe bison there. The forest adventure trail features climbing opportunities, an ant house, an exhibition with tactile and visual panels, and a dendrophone. For a different kind of outing, Mirow Palace Park offers walks along the lakeshore, through Baroque avenues and to Love Island.
