Ventschow’s landscape was shaped largely by the Weichselian glaciation. Its varied terrain includes many lakes and mixed forest areas; parts of the landscape are also designated nature reserves. Those interested in Ventschow will find a setting for days outdoors, with walks, nature watching and opportunities for fishing.

Nature and trails around Ventschow

Orchids and ferns grow in the area. Hikers may also spot white-tailed eagles and red kites. Such sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed—nature watching is therefore a possible addition to the day, not a fixed activity that can be planned with certainty. The designated nature reserves give the landscape another distinctive feature. If you are planning a specific route, check the current regulations for the protected areas.

Numerous trails are suitable for hiking and walking. This lets you shape your stay around exercise at your own pace, without assuming a particular route or distance. Walks can be supplemented seasonally by picking mushrooms and berries; the applicable nature conservation regulations apply. Trail conditions and signage can also change, so it is worth checking the latest information before planning a route.

Fishing and cycling

Fishing is possible at some local waters for people with a valid fishing licence. Before fishing, check locally which access and permit requirements apply. This offers different ways to spend your time: on hiking trails, watching nature or taking a fishing trip. You can choose accommodation to suit the activities you actually plan to do.

As a separate cycling option, the Schweriner-See circular route runs from Hohen Viecheln towards Ventschow. The route passes through the Döpe Nature Reserve and by the rampart of the former Slavic castle of Dobin. Here, a designated cycle route, a protected area and a historic site come together—offering a different perspective on the area than hiking on local trails. Route conditions and signage can change; check them before setting out.

The surrounding region also offers a geological highlight: geological outcrops yield fossils such as sea urchins and Sternberg cakes. These finds are part of the wider landscape and are not exclusive to Ventschow.

Rail connections and the wider landscape

From Ventschow, you can take trains on the Bad Kleinen–Rostock line. There are two platforms in the village; trains run every two hours, but not all of them stop in Ventschow. So check the current timetable and the stops served before travelling. An alternative connection to Hohen Viecheln is to take the regional train to Ventschow and then continue by bus; here too, check the latest connections and times.

At the district level, Nordwestmecklenburg’s landscape encompasses two differently named areas: to the north lies the “Nordwestmecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay,” and to the south the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin.” The district’s landscape also includes terminal moraine ridges, gently rolling ground moraine plateaus, stretches of coast, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains. This broader perspective complements the view of the lakes, forests and trails around Ventschow without treating the individual landscape areas as one and the same.
