When planning your trip to Upahl, you can focus on a variety of themes: church and castle history, art, archaeological remains, or landscape. The wider travel destination of Northwest Mecklenburg places these themes in a broader regional context. The following places and features show how varied the impressions can be.

Village history and a cycling church

Friedrichshagen has preserved its established structure as a farming village, with historic farmsteads still an important feature. The village church is also part of this setting: it dates from the 14th century and is designated as a tourist cycling church. Extensive restoration and conservation work has saved it from decay. This brings rural settlement history and an important church building together in one place. For those interested in cultural history, it offers a vivid way to explore the different traces that can shape a village over a long period.

PlĂĽschow Castle: architecture and art

The castle in Plüschow was built in 1763. Its striking architectural details include Rococo stucco ceilings and an impressive double-flight staircase, which is part of the castle’s protected historic status. Parts of the former park have been preserved behind the building. Here, history can be explored through different elements: the period when it was built, its interior features, and the surviving grounds.

Plüschow Castle is also a place for art. International artists live and work there, and the castle hosts a wide range of cultural events. Since German reunification, it has been known for exhibitions of modern and contemporary art; over the decades, Plüschow has earned a reputation for art and culture beyond the region. If you would like to include an event in your travel plans, check its dates in advance. Plüschow is also on the Lübeck–Rostock railway line.

Landscape, old trees, and archaeological traces

In Kastahn, the Stepenitz and Billerbach streams shape the landscape. The entire village is a protected historic site; the protected area of Kastahn also includes stands of old trees. These landscape features add to the village’s historic character, though the two are not visible in the same way: streams shape the landscape, while old trees and protected status point to further aspects of the village’s history.

A different interest leads to the Everstorfer Forest. Its megalithic tombs are among the most significant archaeological monuments in western Mecklenburg and are a popular destination for excursions. As traces of earlier times, they offer a contrast to the more recent histories of villages and castles. If these subjects particularly interest you, you can consider them alongside architecture and art history when choosing places to visit.

Northwest Mecklenburg as a broader landscape setting

The wider travel destination of Northwest Mecklenburg encompasses the “Northwest Mecklenburg Upland with Wismar Bay” landscape area in the north and the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin” in the south. Terminal moraine ridges, gently rolling ground moraine plateaus, steep and flat coastal stretches, glacial meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains shape the district’s landscape.

Individual protected landscapes and buildings also make their own mark. The “Radegast Valley” landscape protection area covers approximately 600 hectares between the southern edge of Rehna and Neddersee near Gadebusch. It includes the strongly meandering, natural course of the Radegast, as well as adjacent grassland, reed beds, trees, and wet woodlands. Gadebusch is home to Gadebusch Castle, a Renaissance castle dating from 1573 and a rare example of Mecklenburg or North German Brick Gothic Renaissance architecture. Reliefs in the regional Johann Albrecht style are among its distinctive features.

Choose the right focus for your trip

These themes raise different questions for your travel plans. For cultural events, the date is key; for a trip focused on landscapes, the varied natural and landscape features of Northwest Mecklenburg take centre stage. This lets you search for accommodation with a clear idea of what you would like to discover during your trip.
